Senior Pipe Stress Engineer

The Senior Pipe Stress Engineer will be based in our Honeywell LNG Headquarters located in Allentown, PA. You will contribute to the LNG Mechanical Design Engineering (MDE) - External Engineering team.

As a member of the LNG MDE External Engineering team, you will be accountable for all stress analyses of piping systems related to LNG Equipment design. You will be responsible for supporting a complex and dynamic LNG equipment business by working across all engineering disciplines, ensuring compliance with engineering standards and project specifications. The person in this role will complete engineering analyses and calculations for piping systems including pipe supports related to LNG Coil Wound Heat Exchangers, other Pressure Vessels, Cold Boxes, and Modularized Liquefaction Equipment.

Other duties will include checking and approving of detailed design piping isometric and pipe support drawings created by others, reviewing customer specifications, participating in internal and external model review meetings, and supporting heat exchanger design work, bid activities, continuous improvement, manufacturing activities, customer liaison, and field work.

The position requires occasional domestic and international travel.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

The Honeywell Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Mechanical Design Engineering team designs and manufactures specialized Coil Wound Heat Exchangers and other natural gas liquefaction equipment. The equipment is designed by our engineering organization and fabricated at our manufacturing facility in Port Manatee, FL, or other domestic and international 3rd party facilities. Our customers use this equipment to liquefy extracted natural gas, massively improving its transportability as an energy source to end users around the world.

The position of Pipe Stress Engineer shall be responsible for piping stress analyses on projects executed within LNG Mechanical Design Engineering team. The primary purpose is to provide a safe, fit-for-purpose piping stress design to an agreed schedule and specifications. The incumbent will also be responsible for managing or performing stress analyses of piping systems considering environmental conditions such as wind, seismic, or blast loads. This will require collaborating closely with other designers and engineers within the MDE team. Occasional collaboration with other functional areas including Process Engineering and Project Management will be required.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform stress analysis on critical piping systems in accordance with ASME B31.3 Process Piping code and other applicable international codes/standards.

  • The pipe stress analysis work includes modeling of piping systems to verify piping flexibility, stability, and qualification of equipment nozzle loads.

  • Hands-on use of a pipe stress analysis program such as Bentley AutoPipe (Bentley AutoPipe is preferred. Caesar II experience is also welcomed).

  • Review customer/EPC specifications, industrial standards, and regulatory requirements to align scope of supply during project bid phase.

  • Function as a lead Principal Piping Stress Engineer on projects from conceptual phase through project execution.

  • Champions the implementation of modern technology and continuous improvement of work processes.

  • Review and approve project deliverables and stress calculations while ensuring compliance with internal specifications, standards, and industry practices.

  • Participate in model review meetings within LNG team members and with EPCs/Customers (e.g., 30%, 60% & 90%).

  • Responsible for maintaining internal specifications, standards, work instructions, templates and job aids pertaining to pipe stress work.

  • Collaborate with other members within the team such as Structural Engineer, Structural Designer, Piping Designer,

  • Pressure Vessel Engineer, and Pressure Vessel Designer.

  • Maintain internal specifications, standards, work instructions, templates and job aids pertaining to structural engineering work.

  • Participate in plant visits occasionally and international field repair trips, as assigned.

MUST HAVES

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline accredited by ABET with 4+ years of related experience.

  • Experience of conducting stress analysis of piping systems in accordance with ASME B31.3 Process Piping code and other relevant standards.

  • Experience of pipe support design and selection including spring hangers.

  • Prior experience using piping stress analysis software such as Bentley AutoPipe and/or Caesar II.

WE VALUE

  • Ability to read and interpret Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).

  • Working knowledge and understanding of ASME BPVC VIII, Div 1 & 2 and other international piping codes.

  • Working knowledge and understanding of ASCE 7 Standards (Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for

  • Building and Other Structures) and International Building Code (IBC).

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Tools.

  • Knowledge of Dynamic analysis techniques and software.

  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools such as NozzlePro, FEPipe and/ or ANSYS.

  • Ability to navigate a 3D CAD model in software such as Hexagon Smart 3D and Review.

  • Experience with other CAD applications such as such SolidWorks or MicroStation is a plus.

  • Ability to read and interpret Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) is a plus.

  • Collaborative individual capable of working productively in a self-directed manner with minimal supervision. Strong organizational, communication, time management, and interpersonal skills.

  • Highly motivated and able to work independently and efficiently in a dynamic environment with competing priorities.

  • Practical field experience will be advantageous.
