UPMC Patient Care Technician, Nursing Student - Neurology in Altoona, Pennsylvania

UPMC Altoona is hiring a Nursing Student, casual Patient Care Technician to help support 7E Neurology!

The qualified candidate will be placed into the appropriate job title and salary grade based on experience and/or qualifications (Nursing Assistant or Patient Care Technician).

Job Summary: The Patient Care Technician provides routine patient care and supports department services. They perform nursing assistant responsibilities, including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning patients). Additionally, they handle point-of-care testing, vital signs, telemetry monitoring, and prevention measures. The role may involve advanced skills like phlebotomy, IV removal, and EKGs based on operational needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Suggests and supports department changes.

  • Assumes responsibility for assignments and problem-solving.

  • Demonstrates awareness of efficient department functioning.

  • Supports department projects and quality initiatives.

  • Assures equipment malfunctions are reported.

  • Establishes effective communication with other departments.

  • Receives feedback constructively and seeks improvement.

  • Communicates effectively with the health care team.

  • Demonstrates cultural understanding and safety awareness.

  • Provides patient care, assists with procedures, and reports changes.

  • Instructs patients and families under RN direction.

  • Adheres to policies, safety procedures, and documentation standards.

  • Performs assigned work efficiently and completes clerical tasks.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Patient Care Technician Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • Enrollment in a Nursing Program with:

  • a) 1 year of general healthcare experience or

  • b) 6 months experience as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion or

  • c) Completion of at least 1 nursing program clinical rotation required

  • Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class upon hire.

  • Successful completion of basic information system training.

  • Microcomputer experience preferred.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medical to the nurse.

Nursing Assistant Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant or EIC training program

  • Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.

  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire ACLS preferred

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Act 34
