Job Summary

This position is responsible for providing quality care to patients undergoing ambulatory surgical intervention in the area of preadmission, admitting, and discharge. The Peri-Anesthesia LPN provides direct patient care and other nursing services to the patient; Provides care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The Peri-Anesthesia LPN also ensures safe discharge for the patients by ensuring they have all their belongings/paperwork and safely transports the patients into the vehicle taking them home.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receives patient into pre-operative area, collects vital signs, and assists patient with preoperative preparation and carrying out certain physician/anesthesia orders.

  • Reviews chart for complete and proper paperwork and reviews the patient health information prepared by the Preadmission Nurse.

  • The Peri-Anesthesia LPN is required to collect, interpret, record, and communicate pertinent data and information that are relevant to the patient's care in surgery providing patient-centered interactions and answering questions.

  • Documents all procedures and tasks thoroughly and accurately in the electronic patient record.

  • Maintains the PACU in a state of readiness, ensuring that all necessary equipment and supplies are available and in good working order, with age specific supplies ready for use as needed.

  • Postoperatively, the Peri-Anesthesia LPN can receive patients that have only received local anesthesia for their procedure. They will obtain vital signs and discharge these patients under the supervision of an RN.

  • Observes for changes in patient condition and provides any needed interventions or urgent care to maintain patient safety and communicates pertinent patient data to other members of the health care team in a timely fashion.

  • Participate in overall Perioperative Department functions including, but not limited to, training of new staff, maintaining appropriate statistics, assisting with Quality Assurance projects, education to improve self and others, and attending staff meetings and annual educational in-services as required.

  • May be required to assist in the maintenance and care of supplies, equipment, and instruments in the PACU.

  • Evolve in your role when performing supplemental responsibilities as assigned.

    Requirements and Qualifications

  • Current NYS Licensed Practical Nurse license required.

  • Proven experience (2+ years) working in an ambulatory surgery center or similar healthcare facility preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability in providing exceptional patient-centered care.

  • EMR experience required, MEDENT preferred

  • Computer skills required with minimum proficiency in Word, Excel, and Outlook.
