Madison County Government Environmental Specialist in Anderson, Indiana

Position: Environmental Specialist Department: Madison County Health Department Work Schedule: 8:00am to 4:00pm, M-F Job Category: PAT-MED (Professional, Administrative, Technological with Medical Field) Status: Full time Date Revised: May 2023 FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Incumbent serves as Environment Specialist for the Health Department. Duties: Receives citizens complaints regarding alleged violations of water purity, housing, refuse disposal, industrial hygiene, and air pollution regulations, consults with facility owners and operators regarding complaints and requirements, and schedules necessary inspections. Responds to residential and commercial incidents when involving health concerns to residents, dwellings, and neighborhoods Reviews field inspection findings and prepares necessary summaries, reports, and notifications Reviews applications and issues final approval for private sewage disposal system permits within jurisdiction Reviews plans for new septic systems to ensure compliance with sanitary codes Prioritizes and investigates citizens complaints regarding rodent and insect infestations Monitors known insect breeding areas and fields complaints regarding insect breeding areas and determines treatment options for specific areas Conducts field inspections to determine site suitability for sewage disposal systems Testifies in scheduled court proceedings as required by County Maintains records of inspections and findings Responds to environmental emergencies, such as hazardous materials incidents, sewage discharges, and unsanitary housing conditions Performs related duties as assigned

  1. Job Requirements

Knowledge of the principles and practices of public health sanitation, especially in regard to waste water treatment, solid waste management, and vector control

Knowledge of state and local laws and regulations governing refuse disposal, water purity, industrial hygiene

Ability to communicate effectively with industry and government representatives, and facility owners and operators in situations or potential difference of opinion or conflict

Ability to plan, schedule, and conduct field inspections and to direct and evaluate the work of others

Ability to read and interpret facility plans and make appropriate recommendations

Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare factual reports

Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle
