Madison County Government Peer Recover Coach in Anderson, Indiana

Position: Peer Recovery Coach Department: Madison County Health Department Work Schedule: 8:00am to 4:00pm, M-F Date Written: February 2020 Status: Full time Date Revised: December 2023 FLSA: Non-exempt To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to be perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Duties: Maintain logs, reports, and records in appropriate files. Provide social support service to individuals at all stage on the continuum of change that constitutes the recovery process Actively identify and support linkages to community resources (communities of recovery, educational, vocational, social, cultural, spiritual resources, mutual self- help groups, professional services, housing, primary and behavioral health care, substance use disorder treatment, advocacy) that support the recovering persons goals and interests. This will involve a collaborative effort including the recovering person, agency staff and other relevant stakeholders. Connect and refer to community resources that support health and wellness, recovery community and activities. Support connections to community based, mutual self-help groups. Link individuals to appropriate professional resources when needed. Provide vision-driven hope and encouragement for opportunities at varying levels of involvement in community-based activities. Develop and maintain relationships with community groups, coalitions, and agencies in partnership with MCHD Visit community resources with recovering persons to assist them in becoming familiar with potential opportunities Identify barriers (internal and external) to full participation in community resources and developing strategies to overcome those barriers Maintain contact by phone and/or e-mail with recovering person to ensure their ongoing success and to provide re-engagement support in partnership with others in the agency if needed. Long-term engagement, support, and encouragement Develop and maintain relationships with county justice and correction systems. Develop, implement, and promote ongoing community training opportunities and outreach events. Work with staff and other community professionals to implement and promote recovery-oriented training programs and opportunities Monitor key indicators regarding overdose and overdose deaths Other duties as directed by the Administrator Job Requirements Knowledge of the Recovery process and the ability to facilitate recovery using established standardized mental health processes Knowledge and skill to teach and engage in basic problem-solving strategies to support individual clients in self-directed recovery Knowledge of the signs and symptoms of mental illness (i.e. auditory and visual hallucinations, aggressive talk and behavior, thoughts of self-harm or harm towards others, isolation) and the ability to assist the client to address symptoms using strategies such as positive self-talk Must have a working knowledge of the drug and alcohol treatment system and a demonstrated commitment to the recovery community Having personal experience relevant to services provided and maintaining a healthy recovery Able to obtain Peer Recovery Coach certification. A valid drivers license is required as driving will be required and reliable transportation. Difficulty of Work Incumbent performs duties which are relatively broad in scope, dealing with a wide variety of situations and individuals. Work is accomplished to generally accepted but not always clearly applicable guidelines, calling for judgment in determination of the most pertinent guidelines to apply to particular problems and situations.
