Summary

The mission of the University of Michigan (U-M) Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) is to catalyze, support, and safeguard U-M research. Our team works to create opportunities, build partnerships, and provide support to U-M researchers to accelerate discovery that improves quality of life for our state, nation, and world.

OVPR is seeking an academic writer who will play a critical role in assisting OVPR's efforts to promote and assess the effectiveness of strategic initiatives that improve the competitiveness, impact, and accessibility of research at U-M. This position works closely with the OVPR leadership team to determine and define needs associated with conveying information to an academic audience.

Responsibilities*

Develop, research, compose, and edit a wide variety of writing/editing assignments such as descriptions of research and scholarly activity, proposals for collaborative partnerships, reports, articles and presentations.

Communicate, with diverse audiences of faculty, researchers, and internal and external stakeholders, the scope and impact of OVPR's existing research and scholarly initiatives as well as proposed future initiatives.

Work closely with OVPR leadership to assist with strategic planning for OVPR and U-M research and scholarly initiatives by gathering relevant information and effectively communicating such initiatives' potential benefits and impact.

Assist OVPR's collaborative efforts by summarizing and evaluating existing and proposed partnerships associated with specific programs or initiatives.

Produce reports for and evaluations of existing and future projects.

Identify and assess potential opportunities for improvement with writing projects and inform OVPR leadership appropriately.

Plan for and execute the dissemination of information, reports, etc. as needed.

Other writing assignments as required.

Additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

Master's degree required.

Experience with writing in an academic or professional environment.

Well-developed ability to write, edit, and proofread text appropriate for dissemination within a university setting and to outside constituents.

Ability to convey complex ideas clearly and effectively to an academic audience through the written word.

Demonstrated capability to manage multiple projects at a time and meet deadlines.

Experience with preparing reports and presenting findings.

Strong analytical ability to gather and summarize complex information, problem-solve and prioritize work assignments independently.

Excellent interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills.

Effective organization skills to manage multiple time-sensitive projects in a complex environment with multiple stakeholders.

Ability to deliver outstanding customer service.

Careful attention to detail.

Desired Qualifications*

Advanced degree preferred.

Professional experience in a research environment.

Familiarity with departmental and institutional needs associated with sponsored research development and execution.
