Summary

The Susan B. Meister Child Health Evaluation and Research (CHEAR) Center, within the Division of General Pediatrics, is seeking a Center Manager to coordinate the overall operations of the center. The CHEAR Center includes 18 core faculty research investigators and more than 40 research staff, fellows, and students. We conduct research and training in health outcomes and health policy across several core research themes, such as data science, emerging technologies, outcomes research, policy, and communications. Our work is multidisciplinary, encompassing epidemiology, health policy, health services research, general pediatrics, and pediatric subspecialties. The successful candidate will enjoy working in a dynamic, collaborative environment and must have excellent organizational, planning, and communication skills. This position reports directly to the Center Faculty Director. This position is funded through center funds.

The Susan B. Meister Child Health Evaluation and Research Center (CHEAR) at the University of Michigan is a multidisciplinary, health services research center, based in the Division of General Pediatrics. Our multidisciplinary health services and policy research work encompasses general pediatrics, pediatric subspecialties, epidemiology, and health policy. CHEAR collaborates with partners at more than 10 schools, colleges, and institutes and is funded by federal agencies (NIH, AHRQ, CDC, PCORI, HRSA), foundations, state government, and philanthropy. Our members are a policy resource, actively engaging and identifying current high-priority issues in child health for the advancement of child health.

CHEAR's strength comes from its faculty, fellows, and staff who work together to make a difference in the lives of children through research. Our Faculty Investigators are core faculty members located on-site within the Center who serve as Principal Investigators conducting transformative research. Our Faculty Executive Representatives are comprised of colleagues from partner schools and colleges on the University of Michigan campus including business, engineering, law, public health, public policy, dentistry, social work, pharmacy, nursing, and education. Our Research and Administrative Staff are talented and dedicated individuals who provide the support and expertise necessary to facilitate all aspects of our operations.

Responsibilities*

Center Operations

  • Coordinate the overall operations of the Center, including space allocation and negotiations.

  • Work with the Center Faculty Director to develop the overall strategy, direction, and vision of the Center.

  • Contribute to the conception of new strategic initiatives and projects; lead the implementation and expansion of these initiatives and projects.

  • Coordinate and prepare documents and reports relating to Center?s project- and research-related initiatives, including preparation of the annual reports to the department and other stakeholders.

  • Facilitate faculty, staff and learner engagement through organization of retreats and events, including an annual endowed lecture.This includes identifying topics of discussion for the development of relevant agendas, selecting and preparing materials for discussion, preparing minutes, and serving as host for both internal and external collaborators and stakeholders.

Supervision

  • In partnership with CHEAR faculty, provide administrative and functional supervision to 30+ research staff, including providing educational programming, identifying professional development opportunities, matching research staff with project and PI needs, and leading the Research Staff Advisory Council.

  • Supervise and coordinate the responsibilities of 3 Senior Administrative Assistants and an Administrative Specialist.

  • Management duties include interviewing, selecting and training of employees; setting and adjusting their rates of pay and hours of work; planning and directing their work; appraising their productivity and efficiency for the purpose of recommending promotions or other changes in their status; handling their complaints and grievances and disciplining them when necessary.

  • Management responsibilities include the authority to hire, fire, or promote assigned employees or make recommendations that are given particular weight.

Recruitment and Hiring

  • Facilitate faculty recruitment, including staffing the recruitment committee, managing interviews/visits and soliciting feedback in evaluations.

  • Oversee research staff hiring/management with the division HR specialist.

Training Programs

  • Oversee activities for fellowship and training programs, including the CHEAR HSR Fellowship Program, the CHEAR LSI Fellowship Program and the CHEAR CSI Summer Internship Program. This includes management of the application process, assignment of mentors, and collection of required documentation.

Seminars and Events

  • Work with faculty leads to oversee and coordinate CHEAR seminar series, including the HSR Research Seminar, the Methods seminar, the Work in Progress seminar, the Fellows seminar.

  • Coordinate the implementation of an annual endowed lecture.

Communications

  • Direct the creation, development, and implementation of the Center?s Communications strategy, including the website, social media, press releases, visual abstracts, and other promotional materials, with the goal of enhancing the Center?s public presence.Responsible for the content and dissemination of the Center?s Internal, and External Newsletters.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Minimum 5-7 years of related experience.

  • Experience managing staff

  • Ability to organize, set priorities, and manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines; ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a dynamic environment.

  • Ability to analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and experience presenting.

  • Proven ability to function as a member of a team, build effective working relationships and demonstrate initiative.

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and tolerate a moderate degree of ambiguity while still working collaboratively as part of a team.

  • Familiarity with research administration and project management as it relates to sponsored projects.

  • Experience using Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint8.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master's Degree in related field.

  • Experience working in academic research environment.

  • Familiarity with health services research, biostatistics, population health sciences, or similar methods.

  • Familiarity with HR processes.

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday days (not to exceed 40 hours/week), option for hybrid work schedule.
