Police Recruit Summary

The Division of Public Safety and Security's University of Michigan Police Department seeks police academy recruits. Police Officer Recruits are non-MCOLES certified applicants who will be hired and sent to a local police academy. All candidates must meet theLicensing Standards for MCOLES (https://www.michigan.gov/mcoles/standard-training/licensing-standards-for-michigan-law-enforcement-officers) . While attending the academy, your title will be Security Officer, and you will be paid at the probationary rate of $20.87 per hour, with overtime available. UMPD will pay your salary, benefits, tuition, books, uniform and equipment needed to complete the police academy. Upon completing the academy, the Recruit will be promoted in accordance with the POAM contract. You must also complete the University of Michigan Field Training Officer Program upon graduation.

The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) (http://dpss.umich.edu/) leads all public safety functions within the university, including police, security, and emergency management, and offers an integrated approach to safety and security, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. DPSS combines Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint operations to provide students, visitors, faculty, and staff with a safe and secure environment. Required Qualifications*

  • Ability to pass an extensive background investigation

  • High school or GED equivalent + 2 years of relevantpolice/military experience OR Associate degree

  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License

  • No license suspension in the last 5 years

  • No serious violations in the last 5 years

  • No more than 3 minor violations within the past 3 years

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Proven customer service and teamwork ability

  • Available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime regularly

  • Legally able to work in the United States

  • Must be able to passMCOLES written and fitness testing standards (https://www.michigan.gov/mcoles/standard-training/testing/pre-enrollment-physical-fitness-test) before the start of the police academy to continue employment

  • Must successfully complete academy training to maintain employment

Physical Requirements:

Must meet the MCOLES Essential Functions of a Law Enforcement Officer standards. This position requires the individual, through assistance or on their own to perform the following actions: standing, walking, running, climbing, jumping, crawling, dragging heavy objects/persons, lifting, pulling, pushing, listening, speaking, twisting, turning, bending, crouching, hearing no lower than 35 dB HL in each ear, color vision, and visual acuity without correction must be at least 20/100 in each eye with a binocular vision of 20/100, correctable to at least 20/20 in each eye with lenses.

Additional Information

Per Michigan House Bill 4176 and Senate Bill 32, UMPD will recoup 100% of the academy training costs from employees who leave the Department within one year, 75% for those who leave within two years, 50% for those who leave within three years, and 25% for less than four years.

All members of DPSS are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. As such, you are required to report anyClery reportable offenses (https://www.clerycenter.org/) that come to your attention. DPSS employees must also complete the Clery Compliance training within 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Police Officers Association of Michigan union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
