Summary

The primary mission of the University of Michigan Medical School Office of Research is to foster an environment of innovation and efficiency that serves the Medical School research community and supports biomedical science from insight to impact. To that end, our team is constantly striving to enhance the research enterprise, including maintaining an investigator-focused infrastructure, facilitating and diversifying investigators' avenues for funding, and streamlining research processes.

The Medical School Office of Research has numerous reporting units and programs such as the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR), the Clinical Research Calendar Review & Analysis Office (CRAO), the Fast Forward Medical Innovation, the Biomedical Research Core Facilities (BRCF), the Institutional Review Board (IRB Med), and the Medical School Grant Services & Analysis Office. Together, these teams provide the necessary support to position our researchers for success.

In our Grant Services & Analysis Office, we are seeking a Proposal Development Specialist Lead to support faculty in the development and submission of large, complex, interdisciplinary research proposals. This position will lead a variety of activities to assist faculty in pursing funding opportunities and developing compelling proposals to compete successfully for research funding.

Grant Services & Analysis serves several functions for the Medical School and Michigan Medicine. GS&A serves as the central hub of research development, pre- and post-award administration of sponsored projects, and provides data analytics about research within the Medical School. GS&A designs and implements training and resources for faculty engaged in and research development professionals who support research, with the goal of fostering a successful environment for obtaining and maintaining research funding. In its role as a concierge for grant services, GS&A acts as a resource on how to support research development and administration across the U-M. In addition, the GS&A advocates for and adopts enterprise-level tools and resources to aid investigators and support staff in the efficient, high-quality support of research.

Responsibilities*

We are looking for a Proposal Development Specialist Lead (Research Area Specialist Lead) to support research development activities and work with faculty and other researchers to develop, draft, edit, and submit grant proposals to federal and non-federal funding agencies. The chosen candidate will lead and coordinate the development of research project proposals for UMMS researchers, with a focus on large, collaborative grant proposals in the biomedical field. The successful candidate will be able to manage multiple competing projects that are deadline and milestone driven.

  • Develop and maintain familiarity with federal sponsor trends and funding opportunities, as well as alignment with UMMS strategic initiatives. Communicate funding opportunities to researchers and facilitate collaborations.

  • Analyze and interpret NOFOs, BAAs and other funding opportunities to execute a project plan for research teams according to funding guidelines. Identify and leverage existing University resources for team science and proposal development.

  • In consultation with the PI and in collaboration with the department research administrator, help manage the entire proposal process, from concept development through proposal submission, including management of meetings, task assignments, timelines, document sharing and version control.

  • Provide grantsmanship advice, writing and editing support, and project management assistance/expertise to faculty and proposal teams.

  • Write non-technical sections of proposals (e.g., Human Subjects). Assist in research and development of technical sections (e.g., literature searches for Research Strategy).

  • Assist with drafting and/or reviewing required ancillary proposal components (e.g., data management plans, biosketches, facilities and resources, letters of support, etc.)

  • Identify, create, and implement proposal resources for faculty PIs and support staff, including tools, templates, and other written resources. Support research development activities and grant development workshops.

  • Collects, analyzes, and reports data on the performance of program activities.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's Degree in a recognized field of science required.

  • Scientific background with educational experience preferred. Generally demonstrated through a PhD or Master's degree, or equivalent experience.

  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in research development, research administration, or proposal development, particularly with NIH grants and with large-scale proposals.

  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills with a passion for supporting faculty.

  • Strong writing and communication skills, with experience in grant writing and editing, and with a proven track record of professional writing/editing.

  • Demonstrated project management and organizational skills, results oriented, and ability to successfully sustain multiple ongoing initiatives simultaneously.

  • Ability to deal effectively and persuasively with individuals of authority; think strategically, analyze logically, and exercise sound judgment.

  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse audiences and represent the Office of Research Grant Services & Analysis Office as needed.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team

  • Excellent planning, organizational, and execution skills

  • Excellent time management skills and multitasking skills; ability to work on simultaneous deadline-driven projects under limited supervision

  • Ability to use computers and computer software with ease (including Microsoft Word, Excel, web-based tools, and similar software), and the ability and flexibility to learn new skills as different duties may arise.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience in working in an academic research environment or science/technology-related organization among faculty and staff

  • Experience managing the development of competitive proposals for funding and knowledge of effective proposal processes, procedures and techniques for identifying funding opportunities
