Your Specific Responsibilities:

The incumbent, an employee of the Florida Department of Health in DeSoto County (DOH-DeSoto), represents the agency and its mission and values. The incumbent is part of the organization and is expected to promote cooperation, courtesy, and teamwork in a diverse environment. This is a highly responsible position assigned to the Dental program within the DeSoto County Health Department. Works independently and makes decisions based on analysis of data and knowledge of dental practice. Maintains skills and completes on-going training to maintain an active license in accordance with the Dental Practice Act.

Clinical:

Provides dental treatment services for eligible patients in accordance with all Federal and State laws and within the guidelines established by the State Health Office and the Dental Administrative offices. Services are to include:

  • Dental and medical evaluations.

  • Diagnosis and treatment planning – including all necessary procedures required to make proper diagnosis.

  • Restorative procedures (per program limitations) including sealants, amalgam, and composite restorations where indicated.

  • Oral surgery procedures (extractions).

  • Preventive services, dental and medical.

  • Prosthetic services, when indicated (per program limitations).

  • Documenting all patient services and activities in the client record and service record

  • Treats post-operative complications and emergency treatment when indicated.

  • Performs dental prophylaxis and periodontal treatment where indicated.

  • Reviews the patients’ medical history.

  • Administers local anesthesia.

  • Prescribes medications for treatment or prevention of dental infection and relief of dental pain.

  • Other medical and dental referrals as authorized by dental program policy.

  • Travels to school health dental clinics as needed.

    Administrative:

    Provides for the proper daily operation of the dental clinic, including:

  • Scheduling of patients

  • Patient load sufficient to meet productivity standards.

  • Maintaining adequate supplies and equipment, including schedules for maintenance

  • Maintaining and periodically checking emergency equipment and supplies

  • Inspects operatories and surrounding areas for cleanliness.

  • Ensures that equipment and instruments are maintained following infection control guidelines.

  • Monitors the quantity and quality of dental care provided by the dental clinic staff.

  • Participates in quality assurance and improvement activities, including peer review.

  • Facilitates dental clinic staff meetings.

  • Attends training to promote professional growth and requirements.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the terminology, principles, and techniques of dentistry.

  • Knowledge of dental treatment techniques.

  • Skill in using dental instruments and equipment.

  • Skill in filling cavities, extracting teeth, performing dental restorative work, and treating dental diseases, infections, injuries and malformations of the mouth and teeth.

  • Ability to perform dental examinations and diagnose dental problems.

  • Ability to train others.

  • Ability to communicate effectively.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

  • Ability to monitor the quantity and quality of dental care.

  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work activities.

    Qualifications:

    Licensure as a Dentist in accordance with Chapter 466, Florida Statutes.
