Job Summary

Provide sign language interpreting/transliterating services abroad for classroom, laboratory, academic related and other University of Texas at Arlington activities as assigned. All activities shall promote ensuring equal access for students and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (2008) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act in academic programs at the university. Maintain an interpreting/transliterating schedule for deaf/hard of hearing students who are registered with the SAR Center, interact with other interpreter agencies and faculty and staff at international university. Will maintain open and regular communication with Deaf and Hard of Hearing Coordinator regarding the study abroad semester.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide interpreting /transliterating services and maintain a regular schedule of interpreting/transliterating services for dead/hard of hearing students registered with the SAR Center

  • Accept regular or substitute disability accommodations assignments for Deaf/hard of hearing students as necessary

  • Attend and participate in interpreter-related, meetings, in-service training, and workshops on and off campus

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and Sign language interpreter certification (RID/BEI) and five (5) years general interpreting experience.

  • Understanding and strict compliance with Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf/National Interpreter Certification/Board of Evaluation of Interpreters Code of Professional Conduct for Interpreters.

  • Interpreter must have current US Passport.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or graduation from Interpreter Training Program.

  • RID/BEI certification, five (5) years general interpreting experience and two (2) years continuous post-secondary interpreter experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • General knowledge of The Americans with Disabilities Act (AA, 2008) and how it applies to the higher education arena, The Rehabilitation Act (504).

  • Flexible availability for morning/afternoon/weekend scheduling.

  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and proficiency in both sign language and oral/voice interpreting.

  • Fluency in American Sign Language and other sign systems (PSE, Cued Speech, SEE).

Other Requirements

  • Specific job requirements or physical location of position allocated to this classification render the position security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to all weather conditions.

  • Exposure to standard interpreter repetitive use of arms and hands.

  • Housing and living expenses will be the responsibility of the employee.
