MEAG Power Substation Engineer II in Atlanta, Georgia

Position Title: Substation Engineer II

Dept., BU / Section: Transmission/Section 282

Reports to: Supervisor of Substation Engineering

Location: Atlanta, GA (*On-site)

  • Incumbent must work in office in Atlanta four (4) days per week and may work remotely one (1) day per week with manager approval

    Summary

    Under some supervision, is responsible for the design and engineering of more complex electric power substation projects for which MEAG Power has assumed responsibility.

    Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities

    • Engineer and design substation projects. Develop and/or revise substation drawings related to the physical and control design of electric power substations from 4kV to 500kV. Apply engineering standards including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE and ANSI.

    • Physical design includes, but not limited to the following:

    • Arrangement of substation structures, equipment and their foundations.

    • Develop section views and other detail drawings that show how structures, equipment and bus work are installed.

    • Layout of conduits and other raceway.

    • Ground grid design and equipment grounding.

    • Control design includes, but not limited to the following:

    • Development of single and three line diagrams.

    • Development of schematics and wiring diagrams for major substation equipment as well as auxiliary equipment such as AC and DC distribution panels and various junction boxes.

    • Develop bill of materials, SCADA point assignment sheets and cable pull lists.

    • Write specifications for materials and equipment to be purchased. Evaluate vendor qualifications and bids.

    • Make purchase recommendations for major substation equipment and materials; and maintain an accurate set of bid document records of purchases, purchase orders, acknowledgements, invoices and shipping documents.

    • Evaluate contractor qualifications and bids; make recommendations for contracting the engineering and construction of substation projects.

    • Support the development and maintenance of a complete set of MEAG Power design standards and procedures.

    • Maintain a working knowledge of relay coordination, establish communications and maintain rapport with Participants, Protection and Control engineering to maintain relay coordination from customer load to ITS.

    • As assigned, periodically represent MEAG Power and/or department in various meetings and committee meetings.

    • Support the acquisition and maintenance of a diverse library of manufacturers’ equipment and material catalogs for the electric utility industry.

    • Provide cost estimates as needed for annual budgets and special projects such as substations serving customer choice loads.

    • Provide technical supervision to and checks work performed by consultants / drafters / CAD technicians.

    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Required Qualifications

    • A bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline, preferably in Electrical Engineering with 2 to 4 years of experience. Previous working experience within the electric utility industry or related experience is a plus.

    • Excellent attention to detail required.

    • Knowledge of computer drafting tools such as AutoCAD is preferred.
