Research Analyst Senior

Seize your opportunity to make a personal impact as a Research Analyst Senior supporting the FAA’s Airport Uncrewed Aviation System (UAS) Research.

Our success depends on a dynamic, collaborative team to support the FAA assess the capabilities of UAS detection and mitigation systems, and research how to best use UAS to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of airport operations.

The employee will conduct quantitative analysis using operations research tools and other quantitative techniques in the areas of procedural implementations and performance issues. They will also assist in the definition of data mining strategies.

The employee will identify innovative research themes related to the UAS detection and mitigation which includes key themes: Airport Operations, Airport Services, and National Airspace (NAS) systems. The employee will support development and execution of plans assess the UAS detection capabilities of systems. They will write, co-write, edit, and publish a diversity of outputs (working papers, engineering briefings, technical reports) authored with internal and external stakeholders.

The employee will be expected to support creation, execution, and refinement of research, development, test, and evaluation (RTE&D) plans. They should be familiar with data aggregation, clean-up and normalization, and studies for analytics projects. The employee will identify data trends and provide insights that can be used to characterize system performance and guide additional research. They will collaborate directly with internal and external clients to meet analytics demands.

HOW A RESEARCH ANALYST SENIOR MAKEs AN IMPACT

  • Work with highly a collaborative team of technicians, UAS pilots, test directors, Radio Frequency (RF) / Spectrum Engineers and UAS SMEs to assess UAS detection and mitigation technologies. This includes developing and executing RDT&E plans, collecting test results, data analysis, and present findings.

  • Must have excellence written and verbal communications skills. Able to explain complex, technical material to technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Must have the ability to analyze research data and identify needed visual representations of this data (e.g., data distribution over time, heat maps, scatter plots, and system performance over distance).

  • Must have demonstrated ability to author technical reports that present research results in a clear, concise, and logical manner.

  • Must be comfortable working in a dynamic environment using partially defined requirements.

  • Must be able to work outdoors, during all seasons, to support system installations, calibration and shakedown testing, and data collection.

  • Must have some FAA, airport, or aviation related experience, e.g. airport operations, flight operations, pilot license, Part 107 Cert, or other FAA programs.

  • May be required to lift objects weighting 25 lbs. or less.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in operations research, computer science, engineering, mathematics, information systems, management science, aviation, aeronautical, or air traffic management/science. Master's Degree, MBA, or PhD in related field may be substituted for bachelor’s degree and 3 years of experience.

  • Required Experience: Minimum 6+ years of demonstrated relevant experience

  • Required Technical Skills: Research techniques, creating plans, cost estimation, risk management, data collection and analysis. Capable of planning and fully executing research and development projects. On-Time completion of deliverables that meet customer quality requirements.

  • Security Clearance Level: FAA Suitability

  • Required Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the FAA, airport, or aviation related experience. Basic understanding of evaluating functional capabilities of a system or technology. Able complete assigned tasks with little or no supervision. Excellent technical writing skills. Able to present technical information to technical and non-technical audiences. Self-Starter. Highly collaborative. Familiarity with MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint.

  • Preferred Skills: Creating and executing test plans and procedures, data analysis, data visualization. Proficiency using MS Excel formulas or tools like JMP to statistically analyze data and develop visualizations of the research data.

  • Work on site at the Customer site (William J Hughes Technical Center, near Atlantic City NJ)

  • Must have or the ability to obtain a valid US Passport.

  • Possible travel: 10% to 25%

The likely salary range for this position is $80,226 - $133,973. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
