The University of Maryland, Baltimore has an exciting opportunity for a Biosafety Specialist to join the Office of Environmental Health and Safety. *The Biosafety Specialist is responsible for contributing to the design, development, implementation and maintenance of the comprehensive Biological Safety Program. Exempt regular staff receive a generous leave package that includes over 4 weeks of vacation accrued each year, paid holidays, unlimited accrual of sick time, and comprehensive health insurance; professional learning and development programs; tuition remission for employees and their dependents at any University System of Maryland school; and flexible work schedules and teleworking options (if applicable per job). /For best consideration, submit an application by July 24th, 2024./ Essential Functions: * Facilitates the University’s compliance with the federal, state, and University regulations, policies, and procedures governing research using recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules and biological agents. * Serves as an Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) analyst. Performs pre-committee analysis of protocols for compliance with University and regulatory (NIH, CDC, etc.) policies. Serves as the liaison between the IBC and investigators. Provides specialized reviews for other campus compliance committees such as the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). * Effectively utilizes protocol management software to process protocols and communicate information to investigators. * Assists customers by answering questions and providing hands-on training as a subject matter expert in biological risk management. Helps the University research community with interpretation of and compliance with regulations and guidelines for work with biological agents and recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules, biological agent shipping, biocontainment facility design, biosafety and biosecurity practices, risk assessment, work practices, and decontamination. * Audits laboratory activities and facilities, maintains comprehensive and accurate records of inspections, and recommends appropriate safety procedures in accordance with established policies and in compliance with federal, state and local regulations. * Assists the Responsible Official with development and implementation of the Select Agent Program. * Effectively prepares and delivers training related to occupational safety including biological agent-specific awareness training, OSHA bloodborne pathogen training, and DOT/IATA shipping training. * Responds to and assist with the mitigation of emergencies and spills involving biohazardous materials or containment laboratories. * Performs other duties as assigned. Education:Bachelors in microbiology, biology, cellular biology, molecular biology, genetics or other relevant field. Experience:Three (3) years of progressive work experience in environmental or biological safety or conducting laboratory research relevant to the position. A master’s degree may be substituted for two (2) years of experience. Other:No substitution of experience for minimum education requirement. Special Conditions of Employment: * Offers of employment will be contingent on applicant obtaining medical clearance by university approved medical staff. Employee must be medically cleared to wear a respirator. * Security Requirement: *Employment is contingent upon successful addition of the individual to the University’s Select Agent Registration, based upon results of a Security Risk Assessment administered by the FBI Criminal Justice Information Service Bioterrorism Risk Assessment Group. * *Physical Requirements:Light to moderate physical effort is generally required. The position requires the employee can remain sedentary for 50% of the time, traverse moderate distances across campus, and occasionally ascend/descend stools/ladders. The employee must be able to position themselves to access lower levels of cabinetry, drains, and areas under sinks. The employee must be able to carry/move/transport materials up to 50 pounds on occasion. * Hazardous Materials:Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines and instructions. Position will require employee to work with hazardous materials or be in areas where radiation producing equipment, radioactive materials, chemicals or infectious agents are present. Employee is required to wear personal protective equipment and a respirator in certain circumstances where personal protection is determined to be needed.
