Each summer, the Johns Hopkins University Krieger School of Arts and Sciences hosts summer programs for pre-college students. Our programs and courses provide opportunities for talented and motivated high school students to learn more about a subject area of their interest and earn academic credit. Students learn from experts in the field, gain hands-on learning experience through classroom and lab activities, and participate in unique educational off-site visits.
Description
The Johns Hopkins University Office of Summer and Intersession Programs is seeking dynamic instructors to lead pre-college students through a path of discovery in the field of Medicine this summer: JHU Summer Programs- Intensive (https://summerprograms.jhu.edu/program/pre-college-students-discover-hopkins/) .
The Intensive program is a full-day, one academic credit offering that provides students with exposure to the multifaceted world of Medicine. The curriculum is rigorous; students are engaged in academic exercises Monday-Friday from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The course is expected to enroll approximately 22-25 students.
Duties & Responsibilities
Instructors are responsible for:
contacting guest speakers, recruiting/training TA, arranging off-site visits for the program and lab time;
maintaining a Blackboard site to provide and disseminate program materials (if applicable);
identifying pre-arrival readings (if applicable);
delivering lectures;
attending and overseeing all course events and activities;
provide timely feedback to students on coursework and progress;
suggest improvements to course; and
monitor student progress and assist students in accomplishing established learning objectives
The instructor works directly with the Office of Summer and Intersession Programs to ensure the delivery of resources for all program logistics. The instructor also receives support from additional program staff.
Candidates for the position must have a demonstrated knowledge and expertise in teaching in one or more of the following areas:
Organ systems
Introduction of immunology
Skin and wound
Circulatory and respiratory system
Preparation for medical school
Metabolism and homeostasis
Cell signaling and cancer
Biomedical research
Program Dates
Session I: June 22-July 3
Session II: July 6-July 17
Session III: July 20-July 31
*Instructors are welcome to teach 1+sessions
Sample of workday schedule
9:30 am - 12:00 pm Lectures/ in-classroom activities/ labs
12:00 pm - 2:00 pm Lunch/break
2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Hands-on medical training at simulation center/ guest speakers/ site visits/ panel discussion
Master's Degree
High School teaching experience preferred
Knowledge of Johns Hopkins University is helpful
Work experience in the field of Medicine
