Reporting to the Director, SHWB Operations, we seek a Professional Development and Communications Associate (PDCA) to play a pivotal role in developing, curating, implementing, and evaluating staff development opportunities and training topics, and ensuring effective communication to staff to promote continuous development and community throughout the programs within SHWB. The PDCA will build upon existing community building and staff development opportunities including new SHWB employee orientation, quarterly forums, the staff newsletter, and regularly scheduled staff meetings.

This is an in-person position that will require some evening and weekend work. Flexibility for remote work will be available during academic breaks. The main location for this position is the Homewood campus, but there will be occasional travel to the East Baltimore and DC campuses.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

This inaugural role will be responsible for the following priorities,

  • Evaluating the learning needs of the staff and providers as they relate to divisional goals and initiatives to create a strategy and curriculum for continuous development.

  • Creating and disseminating internal communications, reports and materials for staff and providers and devise strategies to improve the office’s communications processes to support a productive and cohesive work environment and ensure all stakeholders are well-informed, motivated, and aligned with SHWB’s values.

  • Creating communications and materials for non-learner stakeholders, like the President’s Office, Board of Trustees, and other University entities.

  • Partnering with student-facing communications professionals within SHWB, Student Affairs, and JHU’s central communications division when needed to deliver cohesive and consistent communications.

  • Coordination of a staff and student leader engagement plan and prepare necessary materials to promote on-going awareness of and solicit feedback on SHWB programs and services.

Professional Development/Event Coordination

  • Assess and review staff and department need regarding development that keeps staff up to date on professional trends in student health and well-being and prepares staff to meet the ever-changing needs or JHU’s diverse population; establish a system for collecting such information annually.

  • Research University resources including Learning Solutions and external sources that provide developmental opportunities for SHWB staff.

  • Update and track required online training modules for SHWB in coordination with MyLearning with the Learning Solutions department. In collaboration with the SHWB senior leadership team, evaluate requirements yearly.

  • Curate, coordinate, and maintain a robust calendar of program offerings to develop the skills, knowledge, and connections among SHWB professionals at all levels including twice a year new employee orientation and quarterly forums.

  • Create and implement opportunities for staff to be in community with each other and to celebrate the accomplishment of the division including end of the year celebration, school kick-off events, and mid-year programming involving approximately 170 staff. Coordinate all logistical aspects.

  • Develop and manage divisional guidelines for attendance at professional development programs outside of the JHU system and for individual office events to provide consistent opportunities across the various offices.

  • Build and maintain a repository of professional organizations we expect the department to engage and stay abreast of ACHA, NASPA, AHEAD, and other professional standards and best practices that shape the division’s work.

Communications

  • Develop and manage an internal communication plan for SHWB divisional staff including divisional newsletter and updates on major initiative and projects.

  • Create compelling written and visual content for internal communications channels, including newsletters, emails, and presentations.

  • Advise the VPSHWB on invitations, speaking engagement, and professional commitments. Develop talking points and relevant presentations for senior administration, deans, and Board of Trustees.

  • Collaborate with departmental leadership to cascade organizational messages and ensure consistent messaging across all communication platforms.

  • Monitor feedback and metrics to assess the effectiveness of communication strategies and adjust approaches as needed.

  • Develop an outreach, communication, and engagement strategy to regularly solicit feedback and update learner governance groups and student leaders on SHWB initiatives including annual reports posted on the SHWB website.

  • Work with central and Student Affairs communications to coordinate all media requests (internal and external) within Student Health and Well-Being.

  • In collaboration with the Director of Operations and Director of Informatics, prepare quarterly and annual reports including operational and goal updates and narratives for budgetary presentations.

  • Support the Director of Operations in oversight of school service agreement documents including annual updates and reporting.

  • Liaison with Communications associate in health Promotion and Well-Being on marketing and communicating divisional programs and services to the broader university community.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with a broad range of people in a variety of organizational situations.

  • Proficiency in using various communication tools and systems.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Experience with event planning and implementation.

  • Ability to analyze information and organizational skills

  • Demonstrates flexibility and manages change in ways that result in productive performance.

  • Must be able to work effectively and independently in a diverse environment with multiple priorities.

  • Must be able to adapt to varying business challenges, while always maintaining a focus on professionalism and customer service.

  • Ability to work in a complex decentralized institution, with a high tolerance for ambiguity.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

  • Three years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior work experience at a university, health system, or complex institution.

  • An advanced degree in a related field.

Starting Salary Range: $62,300 - $109,000 Annually (Commensurate with experience)
