INTERPRETIVE ASSISTANT PART-TIME POSITION Under general supervision, will be part of a team that provides interpretive assistance and public programming. This will include support of the naturalist staff in performing a wide range of duties related to nature-based programming for the general public, schools, and community groups. Additionally, will assist with day-to-day staffing and upkeep of the Chilo Lock 34 Visitor Center and River History Museum. The position requires a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends. This position will report to the Head Naturalist. Prepares for and implements interpretive programs on a variety of nature and history topics; works with audiences of all ages; gathers supplies and transports to program locations; greets and assists scheduled groups; returns and restocks supplies after programs; assists in planning seasonal programs; schedules pop-up programs. Develops and creates program activities and materials for school classes, youth groups, educators, senior citizens, yurt groups, special events, volunteer events, and park visitors; researches and prepares supportive materials and displays; creates binomial keys and simple identification guides. Assists in staffing and upkeep the Chilo Lock 34 Park Visitor Center and River History Museum; greets visitors; gives brief presentations; answers questions, answers phone, direct visitors, and responds to visitors' needs and concerns; researches local history; assists with exhibit changes and repair. Maintains programming spaces, office areas, and Chilo Lock 34 Park Visitor Center (including, but not limited to cleaning restrooms, rental shelters, sweeping and mopping floors, and emptying trash); maintains supplies and equipment used in programming. Creates and distributes fliers to announce upcoming programs; provides material for Park District website and social media sites; develops educational material for park displays, signage, and information kiosks. Cares for animals kept in captivity (snakes, turtles, etc.); feeds animals and cleans animal habitats; looks for signs of injuries or illness in animals; reports problems; keeps records; refills and cleans birdfeeders. Assists with clerical duties; responds to inquiries about programs and natural history in theparks; updates program information on various websites; keeps program attendance records. Assists in park natural area upkeep and restoration such as removing invasive species, trail maintenance, plantings, picking up trash, cleaning kiosks, volunteer events, etc.; surveys, monitors, and records biological events within preserve and park areas; advises Head Naturalist or other appropriate staff and personnel on suggested improvements. Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable PERRP safety standards that pertain to essential functions. Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance; may be required to work extra hours, evening hours, weekends and/or holidays as necessary. Minimum Required Experience and Training: Associate Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in natural sciences such as such as biology, geology environmental studies, history, or a related field, and one (1) year of work experience in the parks and recreation field; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess a valid State of Ohio driver's license. Must remain insurable under the Park District's vehicle insurance policy.
