Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

One year of experience in the building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or as a park building and grounds attendant.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Training in the building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or parks building, and grounds work will substitute for the required experience. Training will be credited in six month increments.

NOTE:

Custodial building maintenance is not qualifying.

Examples of building construction trades include cabinetmaker, carpenter, concrete finisher, electrician, HVAC controls technician, HVAC mechanic, ironworker, millwright, painter, pipefitter, plasterer, plumber, refrigeration mechanic, roofer, sheet metal worker, steamfitter, tile setter and welder.

Examples of building maintenance include Maintenance Repairer 1/2, B/G/E Maintenance Repairer 1/2 and Maintenance Repair Foreman.

Examples of repair/maintenance of mechanical equipment include Operating Engineer 1/2, auto mechanic, Mobile Equipment Maintenance Mechanic, Mobile Equipment Overhaul Mechanic and Mobile Equipment Master Mechanic.

Job Concepts

Function of Work:

To make minor repairs to buildings, facilities, grounds, navigational locks, and light equipment/appliances or to perform general maintenance on marine vessels and all related facilities.

Level of Work:

Entry.

Supervision Received:

Close from a Maintenance Foreman, supervisor, or administrator of higher level.

Supervision Exercised:

None.

Location of Work:

Job Distinctions:

Differs from laborer, grounds maintenance, and custodial jobs by performance of a wide range of basic maintenance and repair responsibilities.

Differs from other maintenance jobs by limitation to basic or minor repairs to buildings, facilities, light equipment, or marine vessels.

Examples of Work

This position is located in the Office of Management & Finance, Facility Division within the Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry. Incumbent of this position performs maintenance/repair duties to facilities/equipment owned by the Department. Supervision for this position is received from the Maintenance Superintendent.

80% BUILDING MAINTENANCE:

Performs tasks involved in maintaining and repairing of buildings: electrical, carpentry, plumbing maintenance/repairs, installation of plumbing fixtures, installs walls, paints, installs drywall, wallpaper, sheetrock, furniture etc.

Maintains ground keeping; examples grass cutting, weed eating etc.

Makes limited repairs to appliances, replaces parts and makes adjustments, etc.

Assist Maintenance Supervisors or Co-Workers in performance of any duties relating to job assignments.

Starts, operates and checks for safety and maintenance of a wide variety of handheld equipment, motorized vehicles, tractors, forklifts, backhoes, etc.

10% ELECTRICAL & HVAC:

Perform the changing of lights, ballast, outlets etc.

Assist with installation of commercial air conditioning systems.

Assist Maintenance Supervisors or Co-Workers in the performance of electrical work (running conduit, wiring etc.)

10% MISCELLANEOUS:

Maintains, repairs and welds, if necessary, grounds keeping equipment, such as lawnmowers, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, etc. Makes minor repairs to motorized equipment including tune-ups, replacement and adjustments of worn or damaged parts.

Operates forklift, backhoe and other equipment for placing items in warehouse.

Other duties as may be assigned.

Functional Requirements:

  • Moderate light lifting. 30 pounds with occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds

  • Frequent reaching above shoulder height

  • Climbing ladders and stairs

  • Reaching above shoulders

  • Walking and standing throughout day (8 hours)

  • Occasional bending or kneeling

  • Reaching above shoulders and carrying specialized equipment needed to perform duties

  • Drive vehicle to preform duties at other buildings

  • Requires considerable walking over irregular ground and standing for long periods of time Climbing on and off equipment

  • Occasional demands maybe required for moderately strenuous activities in emergencies/disasters.
