Job Summary
The City of Baytown is looking for its next Shelter Veterinarian to join our enthusiastic shelter staff!
Under minimal direction, the Shelter Veterinarian provides high quality medical care to animals in the City’s animal shelter. The quality of shelter medicine care shall align with a professional who is dedicated to the care and needs of underserved animals. This practice is for one that is familiar with the behaviors and obstacles that abandonment, neglect and unknown health histories provide. Major practices will include spay/neuter, minor surgeries, pre-and post-operative care, and preventative veterinary care. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to animal welfare and superior knowledge of shelter medicine and animal care for confined spaced animals. An individual in this role should possess solid surgical and diagnostic skills, understanding epidemiology, infectious disease, and herd health. The Shelter Veterinarian must have an excellent team approach to work and communication with critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
The Shelter Veterinarian will provide medical oversight and assess animals that become property of the City’s Animal Shelter. Spays and neuters dogs and cats prior to adoption, or while animals are in foster care. Assist in providing oversight to veterinary technicians, and animal care specialists by establishing medical protocols and ensuring animals are treated with the best care available through routine exams and mitigation strategies that prevent and control the spread of disease.

Animal Shelter Highlights
New shelter includes 14,034 sq. ft. of enclosed area and 9,889 sq. ft. of outdoor area.
$7 million dollar project cost
Surgical suite and private office space.
Annual intake is about 2,500-3,000 dogs and cats.
Surgery includes sterilizations for cats and dogs. (Average about 40-60 animals/week).
Typical shelter medicine to include upper respiratory infection in dogs and cats, intestinal worms, external parasites, isolation cases, heartworm treatments and evaluating/treating injured animals as they come in.
No Kill shelter initiative by 2025
Duties
Spay and neuter animals, vaccinate animals, implants microchips along with other veterinary protocols and medical procedures. Examines and treat injured and sick animals. Directs, and at times performs, euthanasia of shelter animals. Provide recommendations for outcomes for animals based on injury and behavioral characteristics. Helps develop enrichment and healthy behavioral tactics for animals.
Develops training and accompanying communication on appropriate shelter animal care and procedures for Veterinary Technicians, Animal Care Specialists, and other personnel to provide protocols and appropriate medical care.
Enters relevant data into the shelter database as it relates to animal behavior, animal care needs and medical history. May assist with community spray neuter clinics. Must be comfortable with public speaking and presentations to the public and elected officials.
Assist with medical and sanitation protocols to prevent and mitigate disease. Ensure protocols are aligned with best treatment practices for shelter medicine procedures.
Aids shelter managers and/or supervisors in enforcement of local and state laws regarding rabies exposures, and may act as the Health Director’s designee as the local rabies control authority.
Works collaboratively with shelter leadership team to achieve appropriate and positive outcomes for animals in our care.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
DVM/VDM degree from an accredited School of Veterinary Medicine.
Valid license to practice veterinary medicine issued by the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment*.
Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record;
Preferred:
Preference will be given to applicants with previous working environment in shelter medicine/care.
Shelter Medicine Certification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of best practices in no-kill animal sheltering.
Maintains complete and accurate medical records.
Examines and treats animals housed at the City of Baytown Animal Services Shelter while advising on operational decisions to decrease disease and increase good health: provides complete medical records, medical release statements, and certified health certificates as appropriate.
Knowledge of animal behavioral challenges.
Extensive knowledge of animal diseases, animal behaviors and humane capture, and euthanasia techniques.
Knowledge of planning, management, and organizational skills. Ability to supervise and monitor animal clinic operations.
May assist in progress and oversight of shelter clinic budget.
Provide clinical direction to technicians and specialists assisting with surgeries.
Dependable and punctual attendance is an essential function of this job.
Ability to establish protocols and provide direct supervision, in person and/or electronically during off hours to Licensed Veterinary Technicians as needed.
Attendance is an essential function of this position. The City reserves the right to require an employee in this position to work more than 40 hours a week. This position provides services or performs duties for the benefit of the general public during emergency situations. These may include services or duties different from those performed in the usual course and scope of your job. In the event of an evacuation, the incumbent in this position may be required to remain to perform needed services.
