Washington State Department of Natural Resources Recreation Warden, Natural Resource Specialist in Belfair, Washington

Recreation Warden, Natural Resource Specialist 2 (NRS2) Full-time, Project, Represented position Anticipated Project is November 2024-November 2025 Location: South Puget Sound Region- Belfair, WA.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform patrols and report findings; work with agency staff, supervisor, and law enforcement professionals to mitigate and resolve public lands abuse and other situations that negatively impact the State Land Trust or public safety.
  • Write and administer recreation event permits and attend events to ensure compliance.
  • Operate hand and power tools, vehicles, and equipment; including trucks, trailers, chainsaws, brush-cutters, ATVs, dirt bikes, and other small equipment used patrolling and maintaining recreation facilities.
  • Conduct basic maintenance to equipment and tools, including cleaning and servicing equipment, coordinating needed repairs, and keeping records of service repairs and safety inspections.
  • Train and lead volunteers and laborers to safely and effectively perform maintenance and construction work on developed trails, facilities, bridges, and sites in Tahuya and Green Mountain State Forests.
  • Coordinate and support volunteer work parties involving the maintenance of designated trails and developed sites, including documenting and recording volunteer hours for agency and grant tracking.
  • Work as a part of a team to implement grant and capital budget-funded recreation project goals.
  • Participate in all aspects of grant preparation and administration to support ongoing funding needs.
  • Assist in conducting field inspections of facilities and trails and participate in resolving issues identified.
  • Provide education and information to members of the public, volunteers, and other groups as needed; supporting agency and stakeholder goals through positive and professional interactions.

*Required Qualifications: *

  • Experience using computers and processing software including the use of Excel, Access, Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with conflict resolution and defusing tense situations.
  • Associate degree AND two years of experience in a natural resource-related field, with a focus on recreation management and/or user education and outreach; OR An equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Tact and Diplomacy -- Ability to respond to difficult, stressful, or sensitive interpersonal situations in a way that reduces or minimizes potential conflict and maintains good working relationships among internal and external customers.
  • Ability to use independent judgment effectively.
  • Highly developed writing and oral communication skills, public presentation skills, and the ability to effectively inform and educate user groups, volunteers, and the general public.
