Primary Purpose

The Part Time Instructor of ABS provides basic skills instruction necessary for literate functioning to adults in reading, writing, computing (through elementary algebra), listening, and speaking in the context of job skills development and preparation for college. Instructors assist students to apply learned skills to real life situations. Curriculum delivery includes recognition of the many student learning styles, measurement of student progress and flexibility in meeting individual student needs. Instruction will be provided in an online setting.

Essenatial Duties and Responsibilities

Part Time Instructor ABS

  • Instruction may be provided in person, in an online only setting, or in a hybrid combination through large and small group work and individual instruction. Work with volunteer tutors to coordinate instruction. Administer several assessments to students to determine levels of ability. Advise students on educational goals.

  • Provide assistance with word processing, keyboarding and other programs.

  • Work with the director in planning promotion with area employers, media, agency employees, etc

  • Contact students not attending to encourage them to participate in the class.

  • Maintain and complete in a timely manner several local, state and federal forms for every student.

  • Responsible for curriculum development, not only to meet the immediate needs of the students but to enhance total program design.

  • Attend regular in-service training and workshops during the year.

  • Work in tandem with other faculty supporting students’ academic success in other courses as part of an integrated Education and Training team.

Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.

  • Knowledge of teaching and instruction of various audiences and group dynamics.

  • Ability to work with diverse clientele, including students, college staff, employment, and business resources.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing using the English language with or without the use of an interpreter.

  • Ability to operate or oversee the operation of computers.

  • Possess management, organizational, leadership interpersonal, communication, planning, and instructional skills.

  • Familiarity with community in which teaching occurs.

    Ergonomic Requirements

Regular office hours are established between 8 am – 5 pm during the workweek. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities.

Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to work at a workstation for extended periods. Requires to write, read written materials and computer screens, and ability to use telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25lbs. All individuals are required to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in adult education or a related field.

Experience: Two years’ experience in teaching.

Education: Master’s degree in adult basic education or related field.

Experience: Experience in teaching academically disadvantaged adults
