Job Description Summary

Role Summary/Purpose

GE Renewable Energy Hydro Service Engineering team is working on Hydro Turbine and Generator mechanical components for retrofit projects from design to installation & commission following all the warranty period. This position will be dedicated to Generator and Auxiliaries.

Under the responsibility of the Fleet Reliability Operation (FRO) manager, The Lead engineer in FRO (Fleet Reliability Operation) is responsible for tendering and execution of complete retrofit projects as a lead of Generator electrical design and diagnostics activities. He/she would be responsible for key deliverables & timely execution of projects. The fleet engineer provides technical support to customer from tendering to project execution and after warranty period mainly on transactional projects including maintenance & repairs, condition assessments, spares parts, or, potentially on simple retrofit projects, all for Service business with expected cost, quality and schedule. He/she is responsible for coordination with Product Management, Technology, CoEs, Supply Chain, construction and commissioning and Project Office functions, for the technical choice is made to ensure the total cost and performance of the product is in line with the customer requirements and budget as sold.

He will be responsible for leading key technical assignment & programs beside technical execution of projects. He/she shall utilize his expertise & experience to solve problems, develop & execute objectives for self focusing on short & long term business goals.

The ultimate goal is to give better service to Hydro Customers to ensure satisfaction and growth of GE in this specific market.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

Tendering (ITO)

Discuss and understand request for quotations technical requirements with project managers & customers, he/she is the single point of contact for external customer for his scope:

  • Define technical proposal, site visit for inputs collections, Knowledge on reverse engineering

  • Prepare and perform measurements, tests and visual inspections according a predefined diagnostic program

  • Present and explain the prepared Inspection Report with the included results, analysis and recommendations to the customer and to internal partners

  • Define the cost, quality and lead time for the activities of the Services projects at ITO.

  • Follow and Control the cost, quality and lead time for the Diagnostics activities of the Services projects at OTR.

  • Discuss with subcontractors, site organization to validate the solution & industrial scheme with supply chain

  • Define budget and planning

Project execution (OTR), Warranty period (POC)

Define, execute, and manage the project execution on all technical aspects from the design up to installation & commissioning at site, until the end of warranty period (POC).

  • Be a “single technical face” to the customer - Technical co-ordination and follow-up with the customer or / and internal functions or external partner for complete small retrofit projects and spare parts involvement from tender (ITO) to execution (OTR) including design.

  • Responsible to drive and lead the technical excellence in the design, cost and reliability of simple retrofits of OEM and Non-OEM Generators. Responsible to perform the reverse engineering, site visit evaluations, design of Generators in the different phases of a project, starting with lead technical tendering phase for Generator related components, RCA analysis of critical punch points of projects on closure or after commissioning of projects, passing through the basic and detail design stage up to commissioning of the unit. Among the main responsibilities is included the basic and detail design analysis and project follow up, support to manufacturing in GE’s shop and with our suppliers, commissioning and acceptance testing of the units on site.

  • Responsible to gather all the required information from the Tender phase though structured hand-over meeting.

  • Electrical and Mechanical design of parts / sub assembly following engineering processes & validation steps

  • Responsible to provide work packages to the CoE when needed for the project including the client requirements, the interfaces, the planning, the performance, reliability and cost as per his as sold scope.

  • Launch RFQ to subcontractor in accordance with internal processes & support from supply chain

  • Ensure technical follow up during manufacturing and site works

  • Conduct site condition assessment and audit of the existing generator on the unit to support customers on maintenance & repairs operations or before disassembly at site

  • Prepare measurements, tests and visual inspections according technical requirements and care for availability of certified test equipment (handling and packing of diagnostic equipment)

  • Perform diagnostic measurements as per defined instructions

  • Perform visual inspection

  • Prepare inspection report, including assessment and care for archiving of results

  • Perform measurement during manufacturing and for customer acceptance tests

  • Assessment of damages or defects

  • Support tendering and project execution with specific testing and el. machine know-how

  • Technical support of site teams to answer questions or anticipate problems during site works

  • Accept or reject the change in case of deviations from customers requirement and manages changes and issue change orders. Manage supplier deviation request (SDR).

  • Propose additional works recommendations upon dismantling and inspections of existing components

  • Review and validate site records

  • Manage Non conformity root cause analysis (RCA) and general issues resolution

  • Conduct site visits during critical phases of the project

  • Support technically site activities, commissioning and test, performance test phases of the prototype

  • Manage costs and planning

  • Participate in the project review meetings and project gate meetings.

  • Work closely with consulting engineer, Develop design practices ; update & maintain technical guidelines

  • Accountable for the project risks and opportunities.

  • Responsible of monitoring Engineering scope KPI’s

  • Manage Feedback of Experience of projects.

  • Adopt to new emerging technology/ solutions & transfer know how to the COE team.

  • Lead & deliver on NPI, cost out programs & should cost approach in COE ; actively assess new ideas & technologies for enabling product cost-out.

  • Implement lessons learnt from fleet issues, supplier quality issues into new designs focusing on design robustness

  • Respects GE Global Engineering technical know-how rules. (Technology, Quality, TRS…) .

Qualifications / Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical engineering or equivalent knowledge with significant experience (10 years minimum) in design engineering, including relevant experience in hydro turbine or rotative machines business.

  • Knowledge of measurement methods related to inspections, condition assessment, vibration analysis, Insulation material knowledge and 3D/2D technology are added value for the job

  • Strong knowledge in one or several Hydro products / components/ Systems. Hands on experience in execution of engineering of hydro projects & detailed know how on hydro Generators technology & design .

  • Experience from Rotating equipment and or electrical rotating machines.

  • Hydropower experience is an advantage.

  • Able to deliver according to commitments in term of quality, cost and lead time.

  • Propose improvement, improve the processes of Services activities to optimize quality, cost and lead time of Services deliverables

  • Improve the Services personnel knowledge of own area of expertise and enlarge own area of expertise by learning from others

  • Exchange feedback with other Services personnel
