Job Description Summary

The Systems Engineer II will support the development of key analytical instrumentation in the BD IDS ecosystem and is responsible for direct management and realization of all technical development objectives in support of BD’s key business goals. Accomplishment of these goals will require the associate to frequently leverage internal engineering resources and knowledge with routine cross-functional engagement. A successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record these areas.

System Engineers at IDS are characterized by their disciplined, quantitative approach to system and technology integration as well as diverse cross-functional backgrounds and experience. Members of our systems team deploy tools and processes such as Design for Six Sigma and BD’s Global Product Development System to enable more predictable product development and high quality/value products. In addition to technical expertise, system integrators bring strong leadership and team building skills.

Systems Engineers at IDS are responsible for determining and ensuring comprehensive integration of electromechanical devices or systems for automated in vitro diagnostic tests. They collaborate closely within the R&D function, across functional boundaries, and as necessary, external organizations to understand, document and deliver solutions for IDS customers. They have a broad knowledge base that includes life sciences and instrumentation and apply this knowledge to address issues from technology development to concept development to product commercialization and launch.

Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supports the technical development of one or more platform subsystems and works closely with other functional groups (Quality, Regulatory, Operations, Service, Medical Affairs, etc.) to apply technical expertise towards completing project objectives.

  • Provides support for planning the technical aspects of project schedules and managing the execution to the defined schedule, including identification and communication of technical and project risks.

  • Maintains autonomy in daily activities when completing work assignments, routinely consulting with technical project leadership and/or functional leadership to confirm direction and technical completeness of work assignments.

  • Motivates and empowers project team members, and fosters an environment in which associates want to do their best.

  • Researches and proposes technical solutions to a range of difficult problems.Solutions are creative, thorough, practical, and consistent with objectives.

  • Supports the development of technical objectives, implementation techniques, and techniques used to demonstrate effectiveness.

  • Familiar with common systems analysis tools and techniques including timing studies, control systems, and critical parameter management.

  • Develops awareness of diagnostics platforms available in the clinical and non-clinical diagnostic industries.

  • Provides input to technical and functional leadership around changes to support new or changing process or business requirements.

  • Responsible for the management of subsystem requirements and design specifications in a manner that is consistent with BD’s product development processes and policies.

  • Participates in planning and supports the completion of system verification and validation activities.This includes collecting, recording, interpreting, and reporting results to cross-functional colleagues and leaders.

  • Responsible for employing DFSS (Design for Six Sigma) and Technology Development best practices to manage technical risk and impart product robustness and reliability.

  • Assists in the transition from R&D to manufacturing and to system troubleshooting activities for products in the field.

  • Maintains intra-organizational contact in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects.

  • Supports the capture of product and process innovation through the company’s invention disclosure process.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience with Systems Engineering approaches to in vitro diagnostic development

  • Experience with automation, data acquisition, and statistical methods

  • Familiarity with the development of Lab or Industrial Automation equipment and instrumentation

  • Familiarity with requirement and specification management for FDA regulated products

  • Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills

  • Experience as member of project team

  • Familiarity with project management methodologies and tools

Education and Experience:

  • B.S., or M.S, or Ph.D in Mechanical, Biomedical, Electrical Engineering, or closely related discipline

  • Minimum of two years relevant experience
