The Boeing Test & Evaluation (BT&E) organization is seeking a Design/Build Lab Test Design Manager to join our team in Berkeley, MO. The Design Manager is a role within the Design/Build organization that leads a team of mechanical and electrical design engineers that complete the design portion of the hardware development work statement in support of multiple lab test capabilities and their test requirements. This role could include support to the Aeronautical Systems Integration and Test (ASIT), Structures, and/or Electromagnetics lab test capabilities within BT&E. Efforts represent a wide variety of research and production programs primarily in support of Boeing Defense & Space (BDS), but can also include Boeing Research & Technology (BR&T) and non-Boeing test work statement.

The focus of the team is to provide design services that include test article adaptation and/or design, support structure design, lab facility interface (including power, high pressure air, hydraulics, fuel, etc.), aircraft/test article subsystem support & integration, test bench design, electrical system design (interface/control/instrumentation/etc.), load system design, and more. The scale of designs can range from the component level to interfaces with a full-scale flight vehicle. The design team works in partnership with design/build manufacturing engineering and the lab capabilities to provide the designs and hardware needed to complete high-quality, efficient, and cost-effective testing for all business partners and stakeholders.

The ASIT labs support a variety of systems integration testing including hardware in-the-loop, avionics, hydraulics, vehicle management system, and other simulation benches. The Structures labs support full-scale structural, component, and material testing. Test services span a wide range of test types from static to fatigue to loads calibration and more. The Electromagnetics labs provide product testing in the areas of electromagnetic environment effects, antenna & radome measurements, material properties, radio-frequency & electro-optics signatures, and optics/laser testing.

The successful candidate will have experience in test & evaluation engineering and design engineering with a high aptitude for leadership and execution. Experience with lab/ground test is desired for this position. Background in fabrication approaches and techniques is also desired.

Position Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead the team in providing the designs of test hardware needed to achieve test requirements accomplished by multiple lab test capabilities

  • Partner with design/build manufacturing engineer teams to assure high quality design output

  • Manage employees performing engineering and technical activities in the areas of test and evaluation engineering

  • Oversee design statement of work, assign resources, and support requirements synthesis

  • Lead work forecast integration, planning, and department budget development/execution

  • Assure a solid interface with other design/build teams, lab test teams, test program management, and program personnel, including early engagement with test work statement

  • Support organizational development and partnership with lab test capabilities

  • Encourage, motivate, and inspire individuals and the team

  • Facilitate best practice documentation, design practice authorship, knowledge sharing, role development/maturity, and robust design reviews

  • Develop and grow skill base across the team by strategic hiring, individual development, and knowledge sharing

  • Facilitate innovation and special project opportunities

  • Collaborate with managers across the organization and test value streams to lead work placement, resource sharing, and development opportunities

  • Develop, acquire resources for, and execute project and process improvement plans

  • Implement policies & procedures and set operational goals

  • Develop and strengthen relationships and partnerships with customers, stakeholders, peers, partners and direct reports

  • Provide status to program business partners, test program management, and leadership

  • Provide oversight and approval of technical approaches, products and processes

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position requires the ability to obtain a US Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science

  • 5+ years of engineering experience

  • 3+ years of experience in technical leadership

  • 1+ years of experience leading or managing a team

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Active U.S. Secret Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active)

  • Experience in test & evaluation engineering

  • Experience with hardware design

  • Experience in military program support

  • Experience with fabrication approaches and techniques

  • Excellent communication skills

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

Summary pay range: $129,200 – $174,800
