The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) has a potential need for a Blind Rehabilitation Specialist to support a government customer located in Bethesda, MD.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the DHA VCE educational mission by providing lectures at optometry courses.

  • Assist in data collection, collation, and analysis, development of optical procedures and devices.

  • Evaluation and analysis of current Tri-Service ocular trauma readiness training (including topics such as training requirements, methods, programs, and their adequacy) for all levels of training (resident and staff)) and an assessment of the current readiness posture (that is, an assessment of standardization, variance, risks, and gaps concerning the mentioned conditions, and the services and DoD’s ability to quickly deploy adequately trained ophthalmologists to a combat zone).

  • Identification of essential systems-level capabilities necessary for optimal ocular care across the military care continuum from battlefield to CONUS, and assessment of current posture.

  • Assessment of the regional ocular trauma centers including the impact on outcomes, effectiveness of the regional centers, and identifying gaps in the system of care of within the regional center concepts. This analysis shall evaluate the DoD system of ocular casualty care, treatment requirements, and capabilities at all roles of care from the point of injury through rehabilitation (both within the DoD and that which requires VA involvement).

  • Assessment of the current state (“as is”), the optimal state (“as it should be”), DoD’s current posture, and identification of gaps, risks, needs, and obstacles to achieving the optimal state. Assessment shall include considerations of prevention, diagnosis, mitigation, treatment, and rehabilitation of ocular injuries incurred in military service.

  • Assessment shall also consider aspects such as existing doctrine, organization, training and education, materiel and logistics, policies, personnel, and research and development (R&D) gaps and needs.

  • Identification and vetting of critical mission essential task list skills for deployed providers, including those necessary for competent Damage Control Ophthalmology (DCO), Prolonged Ophthalmic Field Care (POFC), and Definitive Ophthalmic Field Care (DOFC).

  • Assist in the development of any Webinars and Instructional courses from a subject matter expert role as needed.

  • Help in the development of practice recommendations and clinical practice guidelines as needed.

  • Participate in the Monthly Ocular Trauma and Vision Readiness and Video Telephone conference by developing and maintaining a rolling twenty-four (24)-month curriculum of topics related to ocular trauma, operational medicine and readiness for purposes of advanced planning and advertising to OTVR VTC participants.

  • Aid in conducting literature reviews and conducting meta-analysis/systematic reviews as requested.

  • Other duties as assigned.

    REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • Dual certified blind rehabilitation specialist with 2 of the following 4 possible certifications in the field. CVRT Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist, COMS Certified Orientation Mobility Specialist, CLVT Certified Low Vision Therapist, CATIS Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist.

    REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • At least three years of clinical experience.

  • Maintain permanent, full, and unrestricted state certifications.

  • Working knowledge of electronic databases and applications needed to properly review and document patient cases.

  • Basic computer skills and be able to work with internal computer programs to support DHA Vision Center of Excellence.

  • Experience working in a military facility is highly desired.

    REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen

  • Must be able to pass a Tier II background check.
