Boston University COMPLIANCE DIRECTOR, Office of the General Counsel in BOSTON, Massachusetts

Boston University's Compliance Services Office (CSO) seeks a motivated and collaborative compliance professional to join its University-wide compliance office. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Compliance Services (AVP for CS), the Compliance Director will provide critical leadership, development, implementation, facilitation, and coordination of Boston University’s Compliance Program activities managed by the CSO. The CSO’s mission is to coordinate the University’s efforts to meet compliance obligations efficiently and effectively and foster ethical behavior and a culture of integrity through reinforcement of Boston University’s Code of Ethical Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.

The Compliance Director will support the AVP for CS in furthering the University’s Compliance Program and the compliance responsibilities and initiatives managed and overseen by CSO, including development, maintenance, management, administration, and oversight responsibilities. Specifically, the Compliance Director will assist with projects and initiatives, CSO’s core office functions (Hotline Facilitation, overseeing compliance with the Conflict of Interest Policy, responding to daily office inquiries where people seek assistance or advice from the CSO or report allegations of misconduct, and contributing to the University’s enterprise risk management efforts), provide Compliance Program, and assist with developing and maintaining the office’s resources and communications, including the websites it manages.

An ideal candidate would possess the desire to work in the compliance and ethics field, and understand the importance of maintaining an effective compliance and ethics program in adherence with the Federal Sentencing Guidelines for an Effective Compliance Program. Prior experience in a related compliance position would be ideal, but is not required. An ideal candidate would have knowledge of the higher education environment, its stakeholders, and familiarity with the applicable federal and state laws and regulatory requirements that apply in the University setting.

The candidate must possess outstanding verbal and written communications, and the necessary diplomatic skills to function effectively and work collaboratively in a decentralized institutional setting. The CSO is a service-based office assisting other stakeholders with University-wide projects and initiatives, and also assists with investigations as needed. As the position will be representing the Office with stakeholders, the candidate must have the ability to work well with others. The candidate must possess the ability to build consensus and communicate effectively with all levels of personnel with a combination of tenacity and tact.

The candidate must have high professional and ethical standards, a sense of accountability, sound personal judgement, and the ability to handle confidential information.

The candidate must have the initiative to work both independently and as a member of a team, possess a strong attention to detail, and the ability to balance and effectively prioritize numerous projects covering a variety of subject matters, as well as other daily office responsibilities. The candidate must possess administrative, organizational, and project management skills, with an ability to manage projects among cross-functional teams. They should possess analytical skills and the ability to demonstrate critical thinking.

The ideal candidate must be proficient with Microsoft, PowerPoint and Excel. Experience with using technology systems for project implementation would be ideal, as the CSO works with stakeholders and Information Security & Technology (IS&T) on projects that involve various technologies like the Learning Management System Terrier eDevelopment (https://www.bu.edu/hr/learningbu/terrier-edevelopment/) , Sharepoint for project management, and specific technology products used for implementation of our Hotline and Conflict of Interest Disclosure process, which CSO directly manages. Experience with web editing and Wordpress, and knowledge of web accessibility standards in developing web content, are highly preferred.

Experience developing and delivering compliance training, and implementing training across a large work setting would be ideal. Previous experience with policy development and management is preferred.

The ideal candidate must possess the ability to effectively work in and with a diverse workforce.

Required Skills

The ideal candidate would have a law degree with 5+ years of experience; participated in compliance course work and/or clinics as part of their degree, be highly motivated to work in the compliance and ethics field, and possess a passion for the mission of a higher education institution. Previous experience working in higher education is desired.
