Boston University LABORATORY MANAGER, Photonics Center, Labs & PM in BOSTON, Massachusetts

The Photonics Center is a university-wide research center reporting to the VP for Research, which serves as an interdisciplinary hub for education, research, scholarship, innovation, and technology development associated with practical uses of light. The nine-story building houses world-class research facilities including 28+ faculty labs, 4 shared laboratories (core facilities), and sustains the work of 53 active faculty members, 15 staff members, and more than 150 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. The Center also runs a Business Innovation Center with 16 companies, and supports pre-award and post-award, including an NSF Engineering Research Center, NIH BRAIN Initiative U19, ARL funded Center for Semiconductor Modelling, and NSF funded Summer Research Experience Programs (REU/T/M). The Center has 3 Laboratory Managers to run the core facilities, which requires technical and operational management and oversight to support our researchers (faculty and graduate students) across the University. Currently, the Photonics Center seeks a Lab Manager who will oversee the daily operations and management of critical instrumentation, including two Scanning Electron Microscopes in the Precision Management Laboratory (PML), and the photolithography equipment within the class 100 cleanroom of the Optoelectronic Processing Facility (OPF). The role demands proficiency in training, application, and troubleshooting of these instruments, alongside coordinating with vendors for maintenance and repairs, budgeting for annual maintenance, and managing disposables for the equipment.

Required Skills

Bachelor's degree with 5-8 years of related experience or Master's degree with 3-5 years of related experience required.

Applicants should have a robust background in micro and nano fabrication and characterization, including but not limited to scanning electron microscopy, photolithography, etching, deposition, and e-beam lithography. A comprehensive understanding of scientific laboratory safety and operations, and excellent interpersonal skills are essential.
