Job Summary

Advancement at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Director of Alumni Engagement! This role plays a significant role in strategizing, leading and driving alumni engagement efforts for the Leeds School of Business. This position supervises a team of three to five full-time employees to engage alumni and other constituents, promote the reputation of the Leeds School, and increase philanthropy for CU Boulder.

This position and its team are tasked with engaging alumni and other constituents, promoting the reputation of the Leeds School of Business, and increasing overall philanthropic support for CU Boulder. This position must successfully navigate the substantial complexity of working with various internal and external constituents and balancing the needs of separate entities while still fulfilling the strategic needs of the unit and the Office of Advancement.

The Director will focus on:

  • Leading a strategic plan for the alumni program with best-in-class business school initiatives and managing a team to drive execution plans.

  • Aligning the Leeds School of Business annual giving efforts with the campus and collaborate on operations with a goal of driving Leeds to have the best-in-class alumni and annual giving programs.

  • Enabling substantial engagement for alumni and the business community through many platforms; facilitating a culture of engagement and philanthropy for current students.

  • Collaborating with internal constituents (the dean's office/cabinet; the directors and chairs of programs, centers, and departments; the CU Boulder Alumni Association; Leeds Career Development, etc.) and external constituents (board members, alumni volunteers, donors, vendors, etc.) to ensure professional opportunities and beneficial partnerships between the school and our current and future alumni and business community.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Alumni Engagement Strategy and Execution

  • Lead and manage implementation of strategy to engage, cultivate and involve constituents, especially alumni, in ways that support the schools vision and strategic direction.

  • Supervise and assess engagement metrics to advise decisions and adapt for improvements.

  • Collaborate with the Leeds Marketing and Communications team to deliver marketing and communication campaigns, messaging, etc. in support of alumni engagement goals; liaisons and partners with Marketing and Communications on communication projects including the schools annual alumni magazine, newsletters, podcasts, events, etc.

  • Supervise Leeds advancement events to ensure they are consistently representing the schools standards of excellence, and providing an important platform for engaging our alumni and constituents.

  • Guide online engagement, communications and annual giving efforts as well as 10+ high-impact annual events.

  • Be responsible for the GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) and MBA Board volunteers ensuring their work aligns with the strategic direction of the School; provide communications support.

  • Partner with and involve deans, directors, faculty, and students, both locally and across the globe as part of outreach efforts.

  • Identify, promote, and support alumni and volunteer recognition opportunities. Examples include alumni awards, alumni publications, community and business awards, etc.

  • Work closely with Advancement leadership to source and engage alumni in fundraising opportunities and create a culture of philanthropy.

  • Identify and implement new alumni engagement opportunities to reach different constituents, including educational, service, family, etc.

Team Management and Leadership

  • Implement all aspects of managing and leading a team of employees responsible for alumni engagement, events, board engagement. Examples include:

  • Provide coaching and mentorship, especially to new team members.

  • Carry out administrative personnel actions (performance management, hiring, training, onboarding, offboarding, etc.).

  • Serve as a member of the Advancement Management Team. Attend scheduled meetings and collaborate with colleagues regularly.

  • Manage budget and align to developed strategy.

  • Set the overall direction for the team engagement activities annually. This includes defining success metrics, setting goals and developing processes for metrics reporting. Keys to success include leading the team to develop priorities and schedules prior to the beginning of the new fiscal year, being clear on roles, responsibilities and expectations, setting overall timelines and providing the needed processes to support the staff work.

  • Develop a team culture which encourages innovative ideas for engagement and cultivates a sense of confidence in trying new activities without the fear of consequences from failure.

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Attend and be an influential member of the campus community of alumni directors across campus to share information, discuss standard methodologies and identify potential partnerships and joint initiatives.

  • Work with CU system, CU Foundation and CU Boulder Advancement staff to assist with the effective identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors to the Leeds School of Business.

What You Should Know

  • This position will occasionally be required to work evenings/weekends.

  • This position has the ability to work a hybrid schedule with some days on campus and some days remote.

  • This position may require local, regional, and out-of-state travel to engage with university constituents.

What We Can Offer

  • $95,000-$114,000. Relocation assistance is available within department guidelines.

What We Require

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent experience or combination of education and experience may substitute.

  • Program and event management experience.

  • Experience developing, planning and rolling out strategy.

  • Experience: 5+ years of professional, job related experience including 1+ years of team lead or supervision experience.

  • Ability to exercise a high degree of tact, discretion, and collaboration in working with a diverse range of constituents including employees, students, volunteers, alumni, donors, and campus colleagues.

  • Solid ability to organize and manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously; must have ability to work independently and collaboratively and adapt to changing priorities.

  • Solid knowledge of current issues facing public universities and interests of assigned school, students, faculty, and alumni.

  • Solid knowledge of annual giving standard methodologies.

  • Strong attention to detail and to visual appeal of presentation materials.

  • Growth mindset, resilience and perseverance.

  • Ability to embrace the shared values of the Office of Advancement.
