We're seeking an independent, action-oriented leader to support the Space Vehicle Systems Test department. The department includes three main groups: SV test, Mechanisms test, and Systems ESTE groups. This position requires a desire to lead people, and a desire to improve the way BAE Systems, Inc. executes. The individual will be the Engineering Manager for a team of 50 people and they will work very closely with the SV SEIT Director and the other SV SEIT Engineering Managers.

The Engineering, Science and Analysis (ESA) Strategic Capabilities Unit comprises the technical talent and organizational leadership that enables the successful delivery of high-impact discriminating technologies for our customers missions. What You ll Do:

  • Manage the space vehicle systems test team, the mechanisms test team, and the systems ESTE team.

  • Manage employee hiring, growth, and retention.

  • Define performance expectations, conduct performance assessments, perform salary reviews and promotions, and support recognition programs.

  • Ensure the group has the appropriate processes and tools in place to meet needs of programs and compliance with approved standards.

  • Appropriately staff programs, initiatives, IRADs, capital projects, new business activities and other efforts.

  • Proactively engage programs to prevent and address issues.

  • Anticipate and ensure talent and skill mix of the group are in sync with the needs of programs and new business development organizations.

  • Ensure engineers are appropriately trained to meet needs of programs as well as employee career goals.

  • Develop and improve test engineering processes, adjudicate Process Corrective Actions (PCAs) and Process Change Requests (PCRs), support Failure Review Boards as required, and support internal and external audits ensuring compliance with applicable standards.

  • Communicate relevant higher-level information to department personnel.

  • Manage responsibilities through delegation to lower-level leads.

  • Make defendable decisions, often with minimal information, and then re-evaluate, adapt, and update as things evolve and change.

  • Identify IRAD and company overhead improvement efforts that would benefit our programs and our teams, and secure funding for these activities.

  • Generate tools, resources, and training to enable our teams to support their programs effectively.

  • Optimize all the above within the allocated overhead budget.

  • Define the vision and strategy for the department that aligns with higher-level corporate strategies and objectives and implement individual efforts to realize that vision and strategy.

  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.

  • Perform other duties as necessary.

On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site five days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.

  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.

  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

  • BS/BA in related field plus 12 years or more related experience.

  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.

  • A current, active TS/SCI clearance is required, as is the ability to maintain this clearance, including successful completion of polygraphs as required by the customer. Prior experience working in this environment preferred.

  • Excellent people skills and interpersonal skills is a must as well as the ability to work both independently and with a team.

  • Experience in the testing of spacecraft, space vehicles, and their related components and systems.

  • Ability to apply sound leadership and management principles to an organization of high performing engineers executing throughout the full program lifecycle.

  • Ability to operate at the mission level and interface to all engineering disciplines and organizations.

  • Demonstrated mentoring, leadership and team building skills.

  • An understanding of test processes including defining test strategies, test plans, and test procedures.

  • Excellent attention to detail while appreciating the bigger picture of the complex and ambitious projects that we take on.

  • Ability to implement corporate change initiatives is required, prior experience in this area is preferred.

  • Ability to work with minimal oversight and direction on near-term and long-term, self-identified objectives is critical.

  • Proficiency in MS Office tools and solid computer skills.

Pay Information

Full-Time Salary Range: $162000 - $223000

Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
