St. Vincent’s is the first hospital in Fairfield County to be integrated into the Hartford HealthCare network, and is the system’s second-largest hospital. *Job Summary* The Nuclear Medicine Technologist operates nuclear detection and imaging equipment and prepares radiopharmaceuticals for Nuclear Radiologic studies by following professional and departmental protocols to provide the physician diagnostic images to identify and/or plan appropriate treatment for the patient's condition. Reports to: Clinical Nuclear Medical Supervisor. *Responsibilities* * Operates nuclear detection and imaging equipment and prepares radiopharmaceuticals for nuclear radiologic studies. Performs Nuclear Medicine procedures on identified patients according to department procedures and protocols and in accordance with NRC regulations by selecting anatomic and technical factors accurately and operating cameras that detect and map radioactive drugs in a patient's body to create diagnostic images. * Prepares and positions patients for exam. Injects and images patients with proper isotopes. Monitors patients while scanning. * Orders, prepares, administers, and disposes of radiopharmaceuticals according to established protocols. Adheres to standards for radiation safety and for appropriate waste separation and disposal of radioactive agents by performing specific tasks mandated by the NRC in order to maintain compliance with NRC licenser regulations. * Adheres to HIPPA, OSHA and NRC guidelines regarding radiation protection, patient protection and record keeping. * Reviews physician's order and patient's CPOE requisition for completeness by reviewing the clinical information, pertinent laboratory results and the patient's chart to ensure the correct procedure is performed and the proper patient preparation administered. * Assesses the appropriateness of requested exams by using pre-established guidelines for exam ordering to ensure that the exam is performed accurately the first time. Interviews patient for medical history. Reviews images for quality and abnormalities. Adheres to HIPPA, OSHA and NRC guidelines regarding radiation protection, patient protection and record keeping. Exhibits proficient IV skills. * Performs quality control tests on imaging equipment, hot lab equipment and radiopharmaceuticals by checking equipment performance and quality of agents administered in accordance with department standards to ensure the integrity of the system and patient safety. Appropriately responds to any emergencies related to radioactive materials * Appropriately maintains exam rooms, supplies and equipment according to performance standards. Maintains area supplies and reports equipment malfunctions. Performs and documents quality assurance testing on equipment according to established protocols to maintain high performance of the system. Transports patients as necessary. _Licensure / Certification / Registration (Required):_ * Certified Nuclear Medical Tech credentialed from the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date. Must have NMTCB or ARRT certification * CT Advanced certification by ARRT required after 12 months of employment unless otherwise documented and agreed upon by Director and Human Resources. _Education:_ *Associates Degree in an Allied Health program relating to Nuclear Medicine or completion of a one year course of study in Nuclear Medicine Technology.
