The Assistant Upper Division Head is a member of the school’s Upper Division and reports to the Upper Division Head. This full-time, 12-month position partners with the Upper Division Head to cultivate a developmentally appropriate, engaging, and supportive student culture and learning environment where students feel a sense of community with their peers and teachers. The Assistant Upper Division Head will provide guidance and expertise supporting the school’s mission and strategic plan.

 

Responsibilities

  • In partnership with the Upper Division Head, support and implement school and division priorities

  • Support the Upper Division Head in assessing, designing, and implementing student-centered experiences and co-curricular programming. Including;

  • Advisory

  • Affinity/Alliance Groups

  • Clubs

  • Service Learning

  • Student Leadership

  • Partner with classroom teachers, advisors, Grade Level Coordinators, and the Upper Division Head to oversee student behavior plans and the disciplinary process

  • In partnership with the Upper Division Head and the Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, ensure that the Upper Division meets the expectations set forth in the DEI Implementation Plan.

  • In partnership with the Upper Division Head and the Director of Academic Support, School Counselor(s), the Director of Student Support, and faculty, as appropriate, to collaborate on academic and social-emotional systems of support 

  • Partner with the Assistant Head of School for Curriculum and Instruction and Upper Division Head to support student learning.

  • Organize and facilitate community events for students, including Morning Meetings

  • Attend Parents’ Nights, admission events, and school outreach events as necessary 

  • Lead the Upper Division in the absence of the Division Head

  • Lead professional development for faculty as needed

  • Demonstrate a passion for lifelong learning and actively pursue professional development rooted in individual and schoolwide goals

    Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.  Master’s Degree preferred.

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of teaching experience at the middle school level; leadership experience is preferred. 

  • Strong interpersonal skills with students, colleagues, and other adults

  • Strong communication skills, including experience in writing student comments and other school-related documents

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in teaching and learning & experience in working in a culturally diverse community. 

  • Deep understanding of child development, research-based practices, and current trends for students in grades 5-8

  • Motivation for and interest in professional development

  • Ability to think independently along with collaborating in a team environment

  • Skill in differentiating instruction

  • ​​High integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality

  • Maintain focus and adaptability  in an energetic and, at times, loud environment

  • Effectively interpret, navigate, mediate, and resolve conflict with students and families in a timely manner. 

  • The ability to hold meetings in person and via supported video conference tools (i.e. Zoom or Google Meet)

  • Proficient or the ability to learn Google tools and other applications as adopted by the school, such as Veracross, SchoolPass, Atlas etc. 

    Physical Requirements: 

  • The ability to sit and stand uninterrupted for 30-minute periods of time.

  • The ability to traverse on and across variable surfaces (e.g. level flooring, stairs, turf, gravel, asphalt, etc.).

  • Ability to lead, supervise, and accompany students to all areas of the school campus (including all indoor and outdoor areas), including during day-to-day responsibilities and in case of emergency. 

  • The ability to position oneself  (e.g.,  stand, sit, crouch, and kneel) to support students. 

  • The ability to work outdoors, year-round, in variable weather conditions.

  • The ability to lift and hold 15  lbs overhead. 

  • The ability to occasionally  transport (e.g., move or drag)  25 lbs 

  • The ability to maintain focus and composure in an energetic and, at times, loud environment
