University Of Vermont Director of Silver Special Collections Library in Burlington, Vermont

The University of Vermont Libraries seek a dynamic, creative, collaborative, and experienced professional to serve as the Director of the Jack and Shirley Silver Special Collections Library. The Director provides visionary leadership, fosters a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, facilitates communication and collaboration, and identifies opportunities to expand program strengths. Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the Director oversees a busy research library with an extensive Vermont research collection, a rare book collection with materials ranging from medieval manuscripts to contemporary artists’ books, the University Archives, and a diverse digital collection. The Director develops and expands the Silver Special Collections Library’s successful teaching and research collaborations with faculty, undergraduates, graduate students, community members, and scholars. As a member of the University Libraries’ senior leadership team, the Director participates in planning, policy-making, and strategic initiatives for the University Libraries.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provides vision and leads in collaboratively establishing and advocating for department goals, priorities, and policies in alignment with the University Libraries’ and the University’s strategic initiatives.

  • Facilitates strategic and programmatic integration of Special Collections expertise and materials into UVM curricula in collaboration with campus partners.

  • Oversees, develops, and participates in the department’s research services and instruction program in collaboration with Libraries’ colleagues and teaching faculty.

  • Oversees, develops, and participates in an active outreach program to promote collections and services, engage with the campus and broader community, and build relationships with other institutions.

  • Works with departmental staff, library colleagues and others to design and implement initiatives focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

  • Leads, mentors and supervises a team of five faculty and four staff members.

  • Responsible for goals, policies and procedures regarding collection development, stewardship, and access to physical and digital collections.

  • Manages endowment and gift funds for acquisitions and programs.

  • Identifies, cultivates, and stewards current and prospective donors, working in collaboration with the UVM Libraries’ dean’s office and the University Foundation.

  • Works with facilities personnel and department staff to manage spaces in four locations.

  • Engages in and contributes to the profession with scholarship, creative activity, and service related to professional and scholarly interests through publications, presentations, and committee work at local, state, regional, and national levels.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (M.L.S., M.S., or M.A. in Library or Information Science, or other variation) from a program accredited by the American Library Association or the equivalent professional credential in librarianship. A Master’s degree in a subject area related to archival work may be substituted. Those who have a Master’s degree or PhD in another field and have completed a formal program providing training as a librarian, combined with at least one year of experience in a professional role as an academic librarian, may also be eligible.

  • Demonstrated management, leadership, and supervisory experience with increasing levels of responsibility over time.

  • Demonstrated experience building and managing collaborative and collegial relationships.

  • Working knowledge of rare book, manuscript, digital collections, and archives management and trends.

  • Experience teaching with special collections materials and providing primary-source literacy instruction.

  • Experience building successful relationships with donors that lead to financial and in-kind contributions.

  • Excellent oral, written, listening, and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility; awareness and understanding of diverse thought, cultures, race, religion, gender, and other differences.

  • A strong record of scholarship and professional achievement that warrants appointment at the rank of Library Associate or Full Professor.

Desirable Qualifications

  • A second graduate degree in a related subject area.

  • Knowledge of one or more languages in addition to English.

  • Successful grant writing and management.

Appointment, Salary, Benefits:

The Director has a primary appointment as an academic administrator and a secondary appointment as a Library Faculty member. Library Directors have a record of librarianship, scholarship, and service appropriate for an appointment at the rank of Library Associate Professor or above. The salary range for this position is $100,000 – $130,000. Library Faculty are not eligible for tenure.
