Description

Job Summary:

Performs repairs and other services relating to water meters. Duties include repairing & replacing of Neptune AMR radio read meters (or similar), meter reading for monthly billing cycle, disconnection/reconnection of water services, work monthly stand-by on a rotational basis, and collecting meter information data logs. Position reports to the Supervisor, Utility Billing/Customer Service.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintains the water meters and mounting assemblies used in the water distribution system

  • Reads meters to determine the total gallons of water used for billing purposes

  • Keeps inventory for the meters, registers, and other various supplies ordered for the Operations Department

  • Performs water disconnection/reconnection of water services as directed

  • Performs re-reads due to abnormal operating conditions or equipment problems or failure.

  • Performs maintenance of meter lids, vaults, backflow preventers and shut off points/curb stops. Works with the Construction Division on the installation of new curb stops/valves required for disconnecting services of customers with delinquent accounts

  • Addresses work orders and service orders related to meters and mounting assemblies, which are generated by customer concerns or management concerns with excessive use

  • Works stand-by on a rotational basis with other Meter Techs, to perform after-hours reconnection services during time of disconnection

  • Perform data logging functions on meters

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (These are pre-employment KSA that apply only to Essential Job Functions.):

  • Ability to gain working knowledge of St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission policies and procedures

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel computer programs and be able to acquire a working knowledge of computers systems used to perform daily duties

  • Ability to act as a representative of St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission to the public

  • Expert knowledge on relevant meter repair practices and procedures

  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures

  • Ability to effectively communicate with other staff members

Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.):

Training and/or Education:

High school diploma or G.E.D. and two or more years of job-related experience

Experience:

Or equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience

Licenses or Certificates:

Must possess a valid Maryland driver’s license, Class C

Physical Demands:

Requires strenuous physical effort to perform manual work involving walking over rough, uneven terrain, repeated bending, climbing, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or lifting objects up to 60 pounds.

Unusual Demands:

Work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress, which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., aggressive human behavior, extreme outdoor weather conditions, confined workspace, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
