Learning Connection Teacher Assistant Job Description Hours per week:Approximately 21/2 hours per week. All positions are temporary and part-time. Employment is not guaranteed for any specific amount of time as the program runs through grant monies. Due to the dependence of the grants and the part-time nature of this employment, there are no health care benefits or paid vacation time. There are no employee benefits, and Learning Connection staff members are not eligible for unemployment benefits when the grant funding ends. Reports to:Learning Connection Program Coordinator Credentials and Qualifications:No educational requirements. Experience in early childhood education preferred. Must attain the National Family Support Certification within one year of hire.

Expectations and Desired Competencies: Effective classroom assistants support both teachers and families within the classroom. They interact appropriately with adults and children. Competent classroom assistants demonstrate an enjoyment of children, an understanding of the complexities of family life, and the flexibility necessary to work with a range of adults and children from varied backgrounds. They willingly accept direction from classroom teachers, yet have the initiative to take appropriate action on their own as needed. Skilled assistants have the ability to focus attention on an individual child while maintaining an awareness of all the children within their care. Experienced classroom assistants exercise good judgment in knowing when to stand back and when to intervene. They demonstrate positive communication skills that are clear, authentically affirming, and supportive of parents and children. They understand the importance of confidentiality when working with families. Job Duties: 1. Assist in the identification and recruitment of families eligible for services. 2. Provide assistance to the Early Childhood Teacher during the parent education classes. 3. Assist in the set up of activities identified in the lesson plans. 4. Care for the children while the parents are with the parent educator. 5. Participate in appropriate training opportunities as needed or directed. 6. Arrive to class in time to set up and greet each family as they arrive. 7. Leave the classroom clean and neat, following all procedures for closing up the building. 8. Model during the class appropriate ways to communicate and interact with young children. 9. Any such duties as deemed necessary for the positive promotion of the Learning Connection Program.
