Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Director of Pre-Health Advising, the Assistant Director plays a crucial role in assisting students pursuing careers in the non-nursing healthcare field. This position involves providing comprehensive support and services to undergraduate, post-baccalaureate students, and alumni interested in pursuing healthcare professions. The position supports students in making informed decisions regarding their educational pathways, extracurricular activities, graduate program selection, and application processes, ensuring they are well-prepared for success in their chosen healthcare careers.

Pre-Health Advising and Coaching (40%)

  • Individual advising of students and alumni who are interested in pre-health tracks to pursue non-nursing professions by ensuring they meet entrance requirements for professional programs.

  • Support students through the application processes to healthcare professional schools, application narrative feedback, personal statements, interview preparation, and other required documentation. Provide individual recommendation letters and evaluation forms for admissions and relevant experiences to qualified students.

  • Liaison and coordinate with college representatives from CHHS , CLAS , and UCOL for holistic student advising to help students on pathways towards professional programs in healthcare.

  • Conduct small and large group workshops, class presentations, and other small scale educational venues to connect with students. To include sessions on admissions test preparation (e.g. MCAT , DAT ) resources and current best practices.

  • Collaborate with representatives in the career center, undergraduate research office, and other campus partners to provide students with resources and guidance to explore opportunities such as internships, research, volunteering, and shadowing experiences in healthcare settings.

  • Makes independent decisions regarding service and student issues.

  • Respond to inquiries from students, faculty, advisors, and other stakeholders regarding Pre-Health advising.

    Program Development and Outreach: (30%)

  • Collaborate with other academic advisors, faculty, and campus organizations to develop and implement programs and initiatives that support pre-health students.

  • Participate in recruitment and orientation activities, providing information and resources to prospective students interested in non-nursing healthcare professions.

  • Maintain relationships with national, regional, and state pre-health advising associations, healthcare professional schools and programs to stay informed about admission requirements and updates.

  • Contribute to the development of activities and written/electronic materials

Student Support and Mentorship: (15%)

  • Establish a supportive and inclusive advising environment, building rapport with students and providing guidance throughout their academic journey.

  • Offer mentorship and support for students facing challenges or obstacles, providing resources and referrals to appropriate campus services.

  • Stay updated on current trends and changes in healthcare professions, sharing relevant information and resources with students.

Administrative (10%)

  • Serves on various committees.

  • Develop, implement, and/or provide recommendations that directly impact advising processes, program development, and published materials.

  • May train and/or supervise student advisors.

  • Collaborate with campus partners and develop liaison relationships.

  • Contribute to the development of activities and written/electronic materials to facilitate the recruitment, retention, and academic student success.

  • Maintain an updated calendar.

  • Attend all team meetings.

  • Engage in continuous professional development and training to improve advising skills.

Other Duties (5%)

  • May plan and participate in continuing education for academic and faculty advisors throughout the University.

  • Represent the Pre-Health Advising Office at programs and functions.

  • Provide recommendations for continuous improvement to all services for pre-health advising and to integrate practices and technology aimed at improving student services.

  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Experience / Education:

  • A master’s degree in a relevant field such as higher education, counseling, or healthcare-related disciplines is preferred.

  • 1-3 years of direct experience working with college-level advising or program development relating to pre-health professions.

  • Knowledge of non-nursing healthcare professional programs, admissions requirements, and career pathways.

  • Familiarity with academic policies, curriculum planning, and higher education resources.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to connect with students from diverse backgrounds and establish rapport.

  • Strong organizational and administrative skills to manage student records, data, and program initiatives effectively.

  • Ability and initiative to stay updated on current trends and changes in non-nursing healthcare fields.

  • Position may include some evening and weekend hours

Preferred Education Skills and Experience:

  • 4+ years of direct experience working with college-level advising or program development relating to pre-health professions.

  • Experience teaching at the college/university level

  • Experience working with various student populations

  • Experience with building partnerships and collaborating across departments

  • Able to manage multiple time-sensitive projects and initiatives

  • Commitment to personal learning and development

  • Experience in utilizing Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and student records systems (Banner, EAB , DegreeWorks)
