Job Summary

This position will be a Lead Engineer for a team responsible for Transmission and Distribution SCADA systems that gather data to monitor and control equipment in our T-T and T-D stations. This team is heavily involved with NERC/CIP regulatory requirements and capital project work. This role works across organizations and requires an intentional focus on relationship building. This position will be responsible for providing leadership for a group of approximately 10 employees. The Lead Engineer identifies problems, develops solutions, and takes action to resolve.

The SCADA engineer works with multiple groups within the Duke Energy organization, including System Operations and our field SCADA teams to perform both the design and implementation of programs to be executed on Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) devices. These devices convey the metering, alarming, and controls of a given substation and assist field technicians and System Operators in identifying where faults are located as well as troubleshooting and mitigation of issues on the Bulk Power System.

Job Responsibilities

  • Evaluate new products and firmware

  • Support multiple SCADA hardware platforms

  • Adhere, create, and support standard deliverables, including port connection forms, I/O Summary lists, and device configuration files

  • Interface with P&C and substation engineering teams, field resources, compliance analysts, and operation/control center teams

  • Read protection onelines, wiring diagrams, and schematics

  • Create IO summaries based on relay settings, drawings, and customer data

  • Develop SCADA configuration files for Transmission, Distribution, Customer & Generation Interconnection Stations

  • Develop SCADA configuration files on multiple hardware platforms

  • Perform Quality Assurance (QA) review on deliverables from other teammates

  • Develop documentation, processes, and procedures for internal use and compliance

  • Adhere to internal and industry compliance and regulations

  • Provide commissioning and engineering support to field resources

  • Database entry of compliance and non-compliance data & perform queries when needed

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.

  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.

  • Applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures necessary for safe and compliant completion of deliverables; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of the highest complexity.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic Qualifications –

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • 8 years minimum required related experience

  • Professional Engineer Certifications/License

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to read a Design Scope

  • Working knowledge of Autocad

  • Understanding of relay settings

  • Basic understanding of networking

  • Understanding of communication protocols: DNP 3.0, SEL, ASCII, MODBUS

  • Understanding or experience with SQL

  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations

  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Proficient in principles of project management

  • Experience in the utility industry

  • Familiarity with NERC-CIP Standards
