Duke Energy Carolinas Accounting & Reporting, part of the Controller’s Department, provides accounting, financial analysis, and reporting support for Duke Energy. This Senior Accounting Analyst role is responsible for certain internal and external accounting and reporting tasks specific to securitizations in the Carolinas registrants. This position will be assigned specific tasks during each reporting cycle in support of Duke Energy Carolinas’ storm securitization in North Carolina, the Duke Energy Carolinas’ accounts receivable securitization, and leading the Duke Energy Carolinas FERC and NCUC filing processes. The position interfaces with business representatives at all levels, at different jurisdictions/registrants, and in different departments/function.
This is the fourth level of the financial analysis classification hierarchy. Employees at this level work independently and receive minimal guidance. Incumbents are required to have in-depth knowledge and experience and work to solve complex problems. Incumbents also act as a resource for less experience employees.
This role is responsible for accounting, financial analysis, and reporting support for the Controller's Department. The analyst will work closely with more senior managers and their staff on various accounting activities including monthly journal entry preparation, account reconciliations and analysis, and financial statement variance analysis. Perform analysis and research ad-hoc requests, develop reporting, and effectively present results for management review and decision making.
The Senior Accounting Analyst works closely with teammates and managers within Finance, Rates & Regulatory, and Treasury on a monthly basis. Tasks include: preparation of monthly journal entries supporting storm and A/R securitization, preparation of various reports including a servicer’s certificate, annual accountant’s report, various bank specific reports/financial statements, ad-hoc data requests from regulatory bodies including the NCUC and FERC, processing payables, supporting regulatory filings with the NCUC, preparation and review of associated footnote disclosures (Form 10Q/K), and preparation of quarterly earnings release financial information. This position will work to ensure that GAAP and FERC reporting requirements are met. This position also works with internal and external auditors, providing necessary information and answering questions. This position will handle moderately complex reporting issues, and there may be occasional research and documentation of significant accounting issues/conclusions. Therefore, strong analytical skills and the ability to exercise judgment are essential.
Bachelor’s degree with major in Accounting/Finance or related discipline
Six (6) plus years of increasingly diverse or complex experience in related field in addition to degree
Possesses and applies fundamental accounting and finance concepts, practices, and procedures
Experience with financial applications (i.e., PeopleSoft, HFM, PowerPlan, etc.) and query tool (WebI)
Experience using Microsoft products such as Excel, Word and Power Point
CPA or working toward CPA
Advanced degree, preferably in Accounting
Eight (8) years or more of professional work related experience
Previous experience in utility or regulatory accounting environment
Effective written and oral communication and collaboration skills
Advanced analytical and critical thinking skills, including data analytics
Demonstrated ability to effectively perform at the experienced analyst level, including ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and adhere to strict deadlines and schedules
Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and foster good relationships with teammates and business partners
Highly organized with attention to detail and ability to efficiently multi-task within tight deadlines
Experience with FERC form preparation and filings and other regulatory filings
Experience with the accounting and regulatory mechanisms of securitizations
Experience with financial systems: Wdesk, HFM, SmartView, PeopleSoft, CAPS Online, and advanced Microsoft Office product skills (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Public accounting or auditing experience
Flexible work arrangement allowing work to be effectively performed from a remote location or on-site
Some overtime is likely to occur but intended to be infrequent and align with peak workloads on the quarters and during the year-end close process
