The Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Chicago seeks a part-time Lecturer to develop and teach one section of an introductory course on concepts in computer programming in the Master of Public Health program (https://publichealth.bsd.uchicago.edu). The position is part-time and not benefits eligible. There is the possibility of reappointment in subsequent years. The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the University.

The introductory programming course will introduce students to the tools, skills, and concepts for computer programing and data analysis for public health and biomedical research. Students will learn the fundamentals of reproducible research through exposure to programming languages including data management, algorithms, project management, and version control.

Following a primer to computer science and programming concepts, the course will introduce students to a programming language for data analysis (preferably in R). Tools and frameworks for data access, management, manipulation, and traceability will be covered, with a particular focus on public health applications. Students will learn the basic programming techniques for data analysis (e.g., user-defined functions, loops, debugging, and testing) and reproducible research (e.g., Markdown, Git workflows, and scripts).

The course will be primarily taken by students in the Data Science concentration of the Master of Public Health program but may also be open to other students with permission of the instructor. This is a new course, and the lecturer will be required to develop all course materials with input from the director of the Data Science concentration.

Courses are held for nine weeks, with the tenth week for a final project or exam. It is preferable that the course meet in the late afternoon or evening 2 days a week for a total of 3 hours, although the exact day(s)/time(s) will be determined in consultation with the Lecturer.
