Duties and Responsibilities

Loyola University Chicago’s School of Environmental Sustainability ( SES - www.luc.edu/sustainability) seeks a Research Associate (MS prepared) for a 2-year research and teaching position to assist in the implementation of a large-scale experimental wetland restoration project and to teach two undergraduate Environmental Science courses per year. The successful candidate will principally work with the research team to implement a large-scale experimental ecological restoration project at the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge ( SWNR ). These research activities will involve coordinating and implementing the mechanical biomass harvest and restoration of a 117-hectare invasive-species dominated wetland at SNWR ; overseeing the on-site conversion of harvested biomass to biochar; experimentally applying the biochar to treatment plots; and collecting a wide suite of environmental and biological data from experimental plots. The candidate will be responsible for data collection and management, managing and coordinating the maintenance of the SES Softrak wetland plant harvester, managing the research laboratory in the SES , and mentoring SES undergraduate and graduate students in the project.

This is a 2-year full-time Research Associate position supported in part by a US Fish and Wildlife Service grant and through teaching responsibilities within SES . The Research Associate will report directly to the PIs on the projects and will begin on July 1, 2024, and end on June 30, 2026.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in all aspects of implementing the US Fish and Wildlife Service projects (field restoration, botanical surveys and biodiversity monitoring, biomass utilization, statistical analysis, and data interpretation). This includes the field research components of the project – eight to ten weeks of summer residence at the University of Michigan Biological Station (http://www.lsa.umich.edu/umbs) and at Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge per year required

  • Loyola Research Lab oversight and organization: organization of lab, organization of data, managing lab research projects, ordering supplies, hiring and oversight of student researchers

  • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

The successful candidate must have a Master’s degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Wetland Ecology, Conservation & Restoration, or a related field, with demonstrated competence in teaching, fieldwork, research design, sample analyses, statistical analyses, and writing manuscripts. The candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills, strong organizational skills, and demonstrate reliability and leadership within a team. Experience mentoring students is preferred.
