The recent global supply chain crisis has put Flexport center stage as we continue to play a pivotal role in how goods move around the world. At a valuation of $8 billion, we’re experiencing record growth and are proud to have the support of the best investors in the game who believe in our mission, solutions and people. Ready to tackle global challenges that impact business, society, and the environment? Come join us.

The opportunity:

We're seeking a Software Engineer II to join our multi-disciplinary Ocean Consolidations Team. This team builds tools that optimize our network of Ocean Consolidations services, allowing customers to ship less-than-container load (LCL) shipments easily, reliably, and at the right price. This role is perfect for someone who is eager to dive into the intricate (and often surprising) details of how goods move around the globe. Opportunities abound: one day you might develop algorithms that improve freight routing or container packing, while the next day you could deliver tweaks to planning systems that will massively improve a workflow for our internal operators.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working alongside other engineering peers, as well as partnering with product and business stakeholders to represent technical considerations for our products. Familiarity with the logistics industry is a plus, but not required; we welcome candidates from all backgrounds and provide opportunities for learning about the logistics industry.

*This role is based in Chicago, IL and requires in person attendance 3 times a week with flexibility to work remotely 2 days per week.

You will:

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain systems that represent the real-world intricacies of logistics entities, such as packing lists, booking notifications, and routing guides.

  • Collaborate with business partners and product managers to translate complex business problems into elegant technical solutions.

  • Build highly available, secure, distributed systems in a microservices architecture.

  • Collaborate with peer teams on cross-team projects. This team is building solutions that add new functionality to multiple Flexport systems.

  • Build and launch products rapidly and incrementally, leveraging best practices around CI/CD to facilitate development.

  • Mentor and educate junior engineers on the team and in the larger Flexport engineering community on trends, technologies, and best practices.

  • Ensure high-quality standards by obsessing over metrics and applying learnings from post-mortems to all services.

You should have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • At least 2 years of professional experience in full-stack development with demonstrated coding skills.

  • Proficiency in modern programming languages such as Java, Python, Ruby, or Node.js

  • Proficiency with technologies like databases, API development, and testing frameworks.

  • Proficiency with deploying, monitoring, and maintaining production services.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with elements of our tech stack: Java, Spring Boot, Ruby on Rails, React, AWS

  • A bias for action; when you see a problem, you fix it.

  • Excellent written communication skills. You will work with people all over the world with different primary languages and time zones, so great writing is key.
