Summary The mission of the Antitrust Division is to promote competition by enforcing the antitrust laws to protect economic freedom and opportunity on behalf of the American people. The Antitrust Division has an opening for a Trial Attorney (Civil) to join its dedicated team and gain invaluable experience working in the public interest to protect the competitive process. Responsibilities The United States Department of Justice, Antitrust Division, is seeking a highly qualified attorney to serve as a Chief in its newly established unit of civil antitrust enforcers based in Chicago, IL. This unit will focus on civil enforcement of the antitrust laws and related statutes to protect competition in the agricultural supply chain, including prosecuting civil antitrust enforcement actions against anticompetitive mergers and conduct, and also enforcing related statutes such as the Packers and Stockyards Act. It may also assist with civil antitrust enforcement in other industries, as needed. Additional information about the Antitrust Division can be found at http://www.justice.gov/atr/. The Chief's responsibility will include: Assigning matters and/or cases to attorneys based on the difficulty and importance of the cases, and the amount and nature of experience of the attorneys. Representing the Department in interagency groups and regulatory proceedings. Serving as an expert consultant to attorneys and to superiors on antitrust and related laws, regulatory agencies, industries, and industry practices, as appropriate. Participating in conferences with top officials in the Division and presenting opinions and advice as to the positions to be taken by the Division and the Department in complex antitrust conduct matters. Planning trial and/or regulatory hearing strategy and, if necessary, being prepared to take over the trial of cases in the courtroom, handle arguments of major issues, or negotiate with defense counsel. Managing all basic planning involved in handling assigned cases and matters. Reviewing all memoranda, reports, and correspondence for technical accuracy, completeness, and soundness. Recommending appellate action where adverse decisions have been made in district courts. Initiating the investigation of all violations of the antitrust and related laws. Performing other duties as assigned. Requirements Conditions of Employment You must be a US citizen to be considered for this position. You must undergo a pre-employment security investigation. This is a non-supervisory appointment, subject to a two-year trial period. Time served in a temporary, term or other not-to-exceed appointment is not counted toward completion of the required trial period. The Antitrust Division participates in the E-Verify program. To qualify, an applicant must: Be a citizen of the United States; Possess a J.D. degree or equivalent, be an active member of the bar in good standing (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least four years of post J.D. legal experience to qualify at the GS-15 level; Have experience in the investigation of potential civil antitrust violations, or general federal litigation experience, including civil cases; and Demonstrate excellent writing, analytical, and interpersonal skills. Education You must possess a J.D. or equivalent degree to qualify for consideration as a Trial Attorney for the Department of Justice, Antitrust Division.
