Agricultural Research Service Research Geneticist Associate in Clay Center, Nebraska

Summary The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the United States Department of Agriculture's chief scientific research agency and one of the world's premiere scientific organizations. ARS Postdoctoral Research Associates are hired to supplement a lead scientist's research on agricultural problems of high national priority affecting American agriculture. This position is located on Nutrition, Growth, & Physiology Research Unit, Clay Center, NE. ANNOUNCEMENT IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED OR 01/31/2024 Responsibilities Identify genetic variants from whole genome sequence that are associated with liver abscesses Determine the molecular characteristics and phenotypic measurements related to the development of liver abscesses, and test newly identified genetic markers for association with liver abscesses Laboratory approaches will include metabolomics, transcriptomics, hematology analysis, ELISAs, enzyme assays, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing to identify biological or molecular profiles that correlate with the development of liver abscesses. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications This position requires a Ph.D. in Animal Science, Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Microbiology or a related field that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics. Knowledge of current methods used in molecular genetics, including techniques used in molecular biology, genetics, and biochemistry is highly desirable. Ph.D obtained with in the past 4 years Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Genetics Series 0440 Individual Occupational Requirements Basic Requirements Degree: genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics. Graduate Education: Genetics, or a curriculum or pattern of training that placed major emphasis on genetics. Graduate study in related fields such as agronomy, horticulture, animal, dairy, or poultry husbandry, entomology, microbiology, plant pathology, chemistry, molecular and cellular biology, and physiology that involved cross-training in genetics is qualifying, provided it placed sufficient emphasis on genetics. Evaluation of Education: Most students in the field take graduate work because specific training in genetics may be limited at the undergraduate level. Under these circumstances, it may be necessary to evaluate undergraduate course work in genetics in one of two ways, as described below, to determine whether or not it is qualifying. Courses dealing with genetics, some phase of genetics, or specific techniques that are applied in genetics work are acceptable. This includes courses in genetics, plant or animal genetics, molecular and cellular biology, mathematics and statistics (as they apply to genetics), population dynamics, and certain techniques such as those dealing with irradiation. Course work consisting of an appropriate combination of basic courses in genetics and cytology or statistics are also acceptable. Education This position has a positive education requirement.
