Case Western Reserve University Assistant Provost and Special Advisor in Cleveland, Ohio

POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Assistant Provost and Special Advisor provides expert advice and strategic direction on a wide range of issues and opportunities related to Case Western Reserve University's academic programs for undergraduate students. Based on a deep understanding of Case Western Reserve University's undergraduate curricula and academic policies, the senior advisor will focus on advancing undergraduate learning and academic achievement at Case Western Reserve University. 

The range of responsibilities for the Special Advisor will include providing substantial guidance and ongoing delivery and effectiveness of Case Western Reserve University's new Unified General Education Requirements (UGER). Related to this will be providing input on plans for supporting continuing and transfer students as they progress towards degree completion against the backdrop of the new UGER. The Special Advisor will also provide guidance on assessing the ongoing effectiveness of the new UGER and recommend strategic changes to improve student attainment of the learning outcomes for the program.

The Special Advisor will analyze academic policies that affect undergraduate student learning, satisfaction, and retention and make recommendations for modifications. This position also serves as a resource for content of communications with campus partners around undergraduate education and learning.

Additionally, the Special Advisor will provide strategic leadership for other that may emerge within the Office of the Provost. The Special Advisor is a member of the core leadership team of the Provost and serves on the Provost's Advisory Council. 

The incumbent will play a critical role in triaging and resolving issues that arise within the academic and administrative domains in The Office of the Provost.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Work with academic and curriculum leadership to ensure a smooth transition and ongoing implementation of the new UGER for new first-year and transfer students as well as continuing students. Identify and help resolve issues with the implementation and delivery of the new UGER that may impact student learning and satisfaction. Develop research questions, analyses, and reports about the implementation and effectiveness of the new UGER, lessons learned, and issues and opportunities for the university to understand and address. (30%)
  2. Coordinate and participate in strategic discussions of undergraduate educational policies to enhance the value of a Case Western Reserve University education. In partnership with Faculty Advancement, provide training and consultation to faculty in the development and design of new courses that would satisfy components of the new UGER, offering best practices and new techniques around delivery of course material. (15%)
  3. Lead the task force for civil discourse project by creating environments where faculty, students and staff can engage in civil disagreement and debate, fostering understanding, empathy and critical thinking. Bring existing courses, programs, events, workshops together to create opportunity for engagement across differences. Encourage open-minded exploration, risk-taking and freedom of speech. Promote and build trust across the university with authentic engagement, honesty and transparency. (15%)
  4. Provide triage services for sensitive and complicated inquiries to the Office of Provost. Gather information and data and research issues. Prioritize, make recommendations, and assist others in navigating their issues and challenges to reach a resolution. (10%)
  5. Lead and facilitate special projects as assigned by the Provost and Deputy Provost. (10%)
