Case Western Reserve University Lab Manager in Cleveland, Ohio

Working under general supervision, perform specific aspects of a broader engineering problem. The engineer 1 will receive supervision on new aspects of the work and on difficult problems. The lab manager will ensure that the laboratory operates smoothly by coordinating laboratory/ research activities. Duties include scheduling staff, reordering supplies, maintaining all security protocols and standards, and working with students and principal investigators to maintain operation of advanced research equipment. The manager must utilize managerial skills and lab safety and operational know-how to ensure laboratories are safe and continue to operate efficiently. The lab manager will take responsibility for all aspects of the lab, which includes tracking and monitoring equipment, watching out for employees, monitoring and replenishing supplies, software security, and documentation of events. They will have sufficient technical knowledge to facilitate operations and maintenance of equipment. Additionally, the lab manager may train lab technicians and assistants on the correct use of equipment. The lab manager will ensure laboratory personnel follow industry standards and safety regulations for the handling and disposal of test samples. The manager will maintain a schedule for lab equipment use by laboratory personnel and is responsible for purchasing lab supplies and/or preparing an ordering list. The lab manager may be tasked with handling security documents and ensuring all information and data collected in the lab is kept safe. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform specific aspects of a broader engineering problem with a specific focus on designing, implementing, and overseeing the laboratory's quality management program. Evaluate adequacy
  • of techniques, study and test new procedures and analyze data. (15%)
  • Support complex scientific and research programs related to area of specialization; analyze data, monitor and oversee experimental processes, and ensure operational functionality of
  • specialized equipment, and/or systems. Implement policies and procedures as relates to HFI laboratory operations. Devise new protocols and techniques to support projects. (15%)
  • Apply methods and techniques, adjust and correlate data, determine errors in results, and follow the operation through a series of related steps to completion. Establish and maintain all
  • laboratory records in accordance with specifications. (15%)
  • Exercise judgment on certain details of the work and in assisting in making preliminary selections and adoptions of possible alternatives. (10%)
  • May monitor laboratory budget. Oversee inventory and ensure supplies are available as required for lab sessions. (10%)
  • May be assisted in work by a technician or student helper. (6%) 

     

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Coordinate on-site training for new and existing staff members. (5%)
  • Ensure communication of laboratory data and appropriate result reporting. (5%)
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and system regulations to provide a safe operating environment. (5%)
  • Ensure compliance with all university policy procedures in the laboratory. (5%)
  • Recommend measures to improve testing procedures, use of equipment, and needs for new equipment. (5%)
