Case Western Reserve University Police Sergeant in Cleveland, Ohio

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Police Sergeants serve as the officer in charge of their assigned shift in conjunction with the shift lieutenant and perform the same duties as police officers in providing law enforcement and protection services. The police sergeant is responsible for planning, coordinating and providing training for new and current officers on their assigned shift. The police sergeant perform supervisory functions at university special events and other details as necessary. The police sergeant will perform their duties in accordance with the mission and values of Case Western Reserve University and the Case Western Reserve University Police Department. The police sergeant will exhibit a proactive, service-oriented approach to the provision of community-based policing services to the faculty, staff, students and visitors of Case Western Reserve University and the surrounding community.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Serve as shift supervisor in conjunction with shift Lieutenant. Supervise the daily activities of all on duty police and security personnel during assigned shifts. This includes supervision of field training officers and patrol officers. Direct and advise subordinates in the interpretation and application of laws and ordinances as well as university and divisional rules and procedures. Perform all the functions of a campus police officer. Manage emergency response and coordinate with internal and external responders. (50%)
  2. Provide shift management of the deployment of resources in addition to the supervision of on duty communications, campus security, Safe Ride and contract security personnel. Consult with other departments and university authorities in emergency situations as required. Activate emergency communications as needed, in compliance with the Clery Act and university policy. (25%)
  3. Maintain accurate timekeeping, training and other records for officers assigned to shift. Ensure that all assigned staff comply with department- and state-mandated training. Review incident reports and other required written reports, logs and documentation for proper submission and distribution. (10%)
  4. Provide training and direction to all shift officers including probationary officers. Review training programs, policy, procedure, protocols and directives to ensure consistency. Conduct periodic field exercises to test and evaluate officer skills and knowledge. (10%)

     

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Serve as supervisory officer for university special events and other occasions as required. (5%) 
  2. Perform other related duties as required. (<1%)

     

CONTACTS

Department: Frequent contact with divisional staff to maintain workflow.

University: Frequent contact with university staff and faculty to exchange information.

External: Routine contact with police, fire and EMS personnel from the cities of Cleveland and Cleveland Heights and University Circle Police Department. Contact with other local, county, state and federal agencies may be required. Members of the public are frequently encountered passing through university property and visiting public venues owned by the university.

Students: Frequent contact with university students to exchange information.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Police sergeants supervise assigned shifts in conjunction with or in the absence of assigned shift lieutenant, supervising all on duty police and communication, campus and contract security officers assigned to shift.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: High school education or equivalent and 4 years of related experience. Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) certification required.
