The Sherwin-Williams Company R&D- Chemist I in Cleveland, Ohio

The Industrial Wood Laboratory is seeking a Chemist I to lead the development and commercialization efforts for new and existing products designed for OEM Industrial Wood customers. This individual will work closely with Industrial Wood Sales and Marketing to identify the needs and timelines for product development projects and will coordinate project activities with all the pertinent functions within SW. The incumbent will have opportunities to demonstrate leadership while providing support to internal stakeholders such as management, manufacturing, marketing, quality, commercialization and will also support external customers. Contribute to the assessment, development, reformulation, quality, maintenance, and enhancement of products through planning, executing, and analysis of experiments with clear and accurate results. Accountable for the solutions to technical problems product or process Learn and retain significant knowledge and use of chemicals, raw materials, substrates, and instruments. Ability to complete individual work on simple projects with minimal direction. Accountable for providing timely and accurate solutions to company problems of simple to moderate complexity and to develop methods of minimal complexity, as an individual contributor. This position will develop towards "expert/trainer" status in at least one broad area or a related specialized area. Must always adhere to company safety guidelines. Work with other individuals in the laboratory to understand formulation and processes. Fill out scale up documents pertaining to own and team members' new OR modified formulations. Test products to industry specifications and write professionals reports to the field. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Must be legally authorized to work in the country for which you are applying for employment (without now or in the future needing sponsorship for employment work visa and/or permanent residence status). Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field. 1 year of paint and coatings lab experience. Computer knowledge and data analysis. Maintain safe operating practices through adherence to lab safety rules and procedures. Understanding of scale up processes and scale up related documentation. Maintain and fill out own and team's process related documentation. Ability to clearly document and communicate results. Strong problem solving and decision making skills. Ability to simultaneously execute multiple complex tasks under direct supervision. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Degree in Polymers and Coatings. Wood coating experience. Waterbased paint formulation experience. Working knowledge of DOE. Working knowledge of coatings application techniques. Knowledge of various coating testing and OEM application equipment. TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Up to 20% Domestic Upon completion of construction, the individual selected for this role will primarily work at the new Sherwin-Williams Global Technology Center in Brecksville, Ohio. Construction is expected to be complete in Q4 2024. Until then, the role will be based at the Breen Technical Center, located at 601 Canal Road, Cleveland, OH 44113.
