Job Summary

Join our Justice Services Department as a Pretrial Services Specialist and play a critical role in ensuring fair and effective justice! You will identify, screen, and investigate defendants for Personal Recognizance Bond consideration, utilizing advanced assessment tools and handling sensitive information with integrity. Hiring Range: $44,800.00 - $53,930.00 annually (salary to be commensurate with qualifications)

This position has an anticipated work schedule of Tuesday through Friday 1:00 PM to 9:30 PM and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Some holidays will be required, subject to change. Under FLSA guidelines, this position is non-exempt.

Provides assistance related to the pretrial services program. Identifies, screens, interviews, investigates, and recommends defendants for Personal Recognizance (PR) Bond consideration.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Identifies, screens, interviews, investigates, and recommends defendants for PR Bond consideration.

  • Completes criminal history checks and follow-up investigations to verify information provided during the Assessment process.

  • Utilizes the CO Pretrial Assessment Tool and other evidence based/informed tools to identify appropriate bond recommendations.

  • Writes accurate Appearance Bonds based on court approved bond and conditions.

  • Completes assessments when requested by the court; provides updates to court for bond reconsideration.

  • Determines victim impact and notification; notifies victims of potential PR bond as required by statute.

  • Processes release documents.

  • Responds to inquiries from defendants and/or the court.

  • Maintains accurate documentation and files.

  • Interacts and coordinates with internal and external staff involved with the Pretrial Services Program.

  • Attends workshops and/or meetings as needed.

  • Collects statistics and information to assist with compilation of monthly/annual reports.

  • Assists with case management of defendants as needed.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be honest, trustworthy and possess a high degree of personal integrity.

  • Knowledge of court procedures, criminal justice system, and Colorado state statutes pertaining to pretrial release highly desired.

  • Knowledge and understanding of victim rights notification and related statutes highly desired.

  • Ability to evaluate individuals, collect and analyze data, assess risk and stability factors, and formulate reports highly desired.

  • Ability to preserve departmental, court, law enforcement, victim, and defendant confidentiality.

  • Ability to act in a diplomatic and courteous manner to deescalate potentially rude or hostile defendants.

  • Ability to use a computer, basic office equipment, databases, and Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.

  • Must possess strong telephone, public interaction, written, and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work within a secured environment, follow and understand strict security guidelines as set by the El Paso County Sheriff.

  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Minimum two years administrative experience in an office environment.

  • Any equivalent combination of related education and work experience that satisfy the requirements of the job will be considered.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Associate's degree in social science, criminal justice, or a related field.

  • Minimum one year experience in the criminal justice field.

Licenses/Certificates:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

  • Must possess and maintain NCIC/CCIC certification, or ability to obtain within sixty (60) days of employment.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check, and drug screen.

Work Conditions

Duties are primarily performed in an office environment and may be performed in a secured detentions or court facility. Must be able to work a variety of days and times, including weekends and holidays. May be exposed to potentially rude and violent defendants.
