Medical Assistant

Columbia, Missouri

The Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist plays a vital role in assisting clients with outpatient psychiatry services. They provide information, clinic and lab services, and check-in assistance while promoting a positive relationship between clients and clinic staff. Additionally, the Medical Assistant helps with Phlebotomy, insurance assistance, and supports the Registered Nurse in monitoring and improving the health outcomes of individuals served.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assisting physicians and nursing staff with patient care

  • Preparing patients for examination and treatment

  • Taking patient histories and vital signs

  • Preparing exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments

  • Administering injections and performing lab testing and phlebotomy

  • Preparing and maintaining supplies and equipment for treatments

  • Responsible for appointment scheduling, prior authorizations, and chart management

  • Providing information to patients to help them benefit from clinic services

  • Visiting residential locations as assigned by Leadership

  • Reviewing physician's orders, MARs, diets, and diet/choking precaution forms during visits

  • Identifying additional medical training needs and communicating with the team

  • Supporting staff in communications with doctors, pharmacies, and other medical specialists

  • Coordinating with Residential RN for hospital visits, discharge planning, and other medical needs

  • Conducting health and medical reviews as instructed by leadership

  • Checking and maintaining Durable Medical Equipment quarterly

  • Accompanying individuals to medical appointments and ensuring their rights are protected

  • Communicating health concerns to the agency team and taking appropriate action

  • Maintaining a schedule of clients' doctor appointments and sending reminders to staff

  • Providing direct support and care hours to medically involved individuals as needed

  • Performing general lab and phlebotomy duties, communicating lab results to providers and nursing staff

  • Assisting with client rooming, verification of data and medical history, and preliminary physical requirements

  • Completing documentation in a timely manner according to company policies and procedures

  • Performing light housekeeping of check-in, lab, and medication rooms

  • Inventorying and restocking supplies, maintaining lab refrigerator temperature logs

  • Managing clinic injection calendar and notifying providers and clients of refill needs

  • Unlocking clinic doors, checking nursing mailbox, and conducting weekly sample medication count

  • Participating in required meetings and performing other duties as assigned by nursing staff and leadership.

  • Communicates effectively in-person, over the phone, and through video conferencing

  • Possesses basic mathematical and problem-solving skills

  • Follows instructions and accepts supervision

Experience and Education Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant Program or Licensed Practical Nurse in applicable state

  • CPR certification preferred

  • Phlebotomy training and previous lab experience preferred

  • One year of experience in a physician office setting preferred

​Employment Requirements:

  • Successful completion of background check including criminal record, driving record and abuse/neglect.

  • Completion of New Hire Orientation at the beginning of employment.

  • All training requirements including Relias Learning at the beginning of employment and annually thereafter.

  • Valid driver’s license in state of residency with an acceptable driving record.
