Description of Work

This posting is intended to fill a total of (3) two Transportation Worker II positions: 60018279, 60018232 and 60018234. You only need to apply once to be considered for all positions.

These positions are located in the Columbus County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State maintained roads. Work includes setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing right of way of debris and hazards, assisting with pipe installation, and operating a variety of hand and power tools. This work includes the operation of various equipment that includes but is not limited to an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe. These positions will monitor tasks performed by inmates and other transportation workers, responds to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled night work.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Knowledge of work zone safety and NCDOT Workplace policies and procedures.

  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching.

  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.

  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations.

  • Experience in the operation of at least (2) two pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper.

Additional Expectations:

Physical activities include but are not limited to, standing, walking, talking, and hearing. Exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date.” Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe shoes are required. This position may be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. Must be at least 21 years of age and willing to undergo criminal history check, complete necessary training, and orientation. Employee must have the ability to lift and carry 50lbs. Safety toe footwear is needed.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
