Job Summary

Battelle is seeking a Division Manager for the System Development, Modernization, and Prototyping team. The position is located in Columbus, OH.

The System Development, Modernization, and Prototyping (SDMP) Division under the National Security Business Unit delivers innovative, high-technology deployable equipment and engineered product solutions that increase service life of fielded equipment, improve mission performance, and provide threat protection for the national security markets. This includes Battelle’s Prototyping and System Integration enterprise capability providing prototyping and integration support for a diverse mix of products and markets across Battelle.

The Division Manager will serve as a leader in the organization and interact with principal investigators, program managers, project teams, other departments, teammates and customers to deliver on business goals. The Division Manager also supports and implements short and long-term plans for growth and continued viability of the business. Our SDMP team uses scientific and engineering expertise to help our clients develop new capabilities, extend the lifetime of their current systems or products, and improve operational performance and safety. This Division brings together scientists and engineers from a range of disciplines, including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, software/computer engineering, systems engineering, and physics. Technical focus areas include but are not limited to, sensors, robotics, automation, radio frequency, prototyping, mechanical development, and systems engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Works with lower-level manager and Team Leads to manage a staff of approximately 110 scientist, engineers, technicians, and technical experts to support the core business.

  • Establishes business focused staff goals and appraises performance. Administers salaries and helps prepare staff development plans. Helps manages work loading of the assigned staff members.

  • Manages technical quality, business ethics, and staff performance to attain high quality products and services through the selection, training, development and motivation of a capable staff.

  • Ensures staff have necessary materials, equipment and facilities to perform work.

  • Leads team to develop and execute business strategies, policies, plans, and procedures.

  • Supports the business development team by helping with capture, leading proposal and marketing activities.

  • Develops and implements strategic and operational business plans to define market focus.

  • Responsible for the overall financial performance of the group, including setting and meeting targets for orders, revenues, and indirect costs. Recommends strategies for internal investments.

  • Works with lower-level manager to establish, manage and control facilities and capital costs.

  • Works with team to understand manpower planning and appropriate staff skill mix to drive business success. Works with team on recruiting strategies and hiring.

  • Provides guidance for Intellectual Property decisions.

  • As leader of an enterprise capability, works across the Battelle Applied Science and Technology organization to support programs outside the Division.

  • Establishes relationships with key clients and supports Program Managers and Business Development in maintaining the core Division programs while also evaluating adjacent markets and new business opportunities.

Key Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Systems Engineering or similar from an accredited institution with at least 15 years of experience and 5+ years of management and project management experience.

  • Proven experience in leading business development and marketing activities aimed at $20M+ programs that involve coordination across organization lines and technical disciplines.

  • Experience in building budgets and understanding the elements to monitor/influence the business profit and loss

  • Ability to knowledgably interact with government and commercial clients and potential clients across a wide range of scientific and engineering disciplines.

  • Experience in product development, design for manufacturing and transitioning prototypes to products/systems

  • Knowledge of tools and methods for project management, especially cost, schedule and scope performance. Ability to assess and take requisite action to address project risks and change requests.

  • Demonstrated excellence in building and supporting a team. Proven ability to lead others in the achievement of goals and create teams driven by initiative, innovation and vision.

  • Must be organized and detail oriented. Must be capable of ensuring that a wide range of different activities (technical, financial, business development, and administrative) are done on time and at a high quality.

  • Has a working knowledge of contractual issues relative to scope, terms, and conditions of the work and corresponding subcontracts/supply chain.

  • Has demonstrated a customer service focus and history of successful client interactions.

  • Must be willing to travel as required to interface with the team and customers.

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen with an active Top-Secret clearance or ability to obtain one.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing engineers, scientists and technicians in a contract research organization.

  • At least 10 years of experience managing hardware/software/product design, development, fabrication, and production or an equivalent combination of education and or experience in engineering management or a related field.

  • Experience working with DoD and IC clients, including leading/writing proposals.

  • Experience with sensor, control systems, unmanned platforms, and infrastructure to include ground control stations and associated C5ISR

  • Experience in DoD Certification & Safety processes

  • Working knowledge of business systems such as SharePoint, Microsoft CRM, and Deltek CostPoint.

  • PMP certification or similar
